Sometimes a game's artbook is also a dev diary but there's still very little in the way of journalistic or academic writing on video game development as a discipline.

Console Wars was a fun read but it’s very clearly trying to create a narrative of Sega as the good guys and Nintendo as the bad guys.

Since then she had grown more irascible, lashing out at passersby and relieving herself freely around his apartment. The final straw came when she peed all over a brand-new leather couch that Carmack had bought with the Wolfenstein cash. Carmack broke the news to the guys.
>“Mitzi was having a net negative impact on my life,” he said. “I took her to the animal shelter. Mmm.”

The cat had become such a sidekick of Carmack’s that the guys had even listed her on the company directory as his significant other—and now she was just gone? “You know what this means?” Romero said. “They’re going to put her to sleep! No one’s going to want to claim her. She’s going down! Down to Chinatown!”
>Carmack shrugged it off and returned to work. The same rule applied to a cat, a computer program or, for that matter, a person. When something becomes a problem, let it go or, if necessary, have it surgically removed.

You'll probably be hard pressed to get books. There are videos of video game post mortems. The one for Diablo 1 is good.

Jacob Geller just put out a pretty good book but it's slanted towards media analysis and is mostly annotated transcripts of his old videos.

Was reading grapes of hate when internet was down but it's a rollercoaster of fucked up events and it made me depressed, there's some books where you get one kick in the stomach right at the end like about mice and men, but that one's having it kicking your balls all around until they turn purple and swollen. Stopped at the one eyed guy unloading his whole goddamn life story at two guys who stepped in his garage just to get the car fixed.
