They're roughly balanced around NG+, yes. OP should play through a good chunk of NG+ and get some better gear before trying them. It's well worth it, some of the DLC bosses are great. I think Masamune's one of the best in the game.

Just outrange him, his weakspot is in front of him (the centipede head) unlike other bosses, so you can safely avoid his attacks while doing extra damage

I played Nioh 2 before going back to the first game but Maria easily became my favourite boss in the series (along with Hayabusa). I wish there were others like her, stupidly fast and aggressive, demanding you to engage with her, very clear moveset with no uncertainty on any hitboxes.

That's where I quit too. Apparently I was 50 gear levels behind and couldnt be assed to farm to beat the centipede dude. He just had too many bullshit attacks for me to care.
