The vast majority of trophies are either complete afterthoughts with no game progression synergy or grindy busywork meant to pad out the playtime.

I haven't played a game with a fair and balanced trophy system since pic related.

As a former trophyfag I got into it because it made me see the whole of the game and try things I wouldn't try previously, like higher difficulty modes, all side quests, all collectibles, etc. It just made the whole experience more rewarding, but on the flip side it felt like I didn't really play the game if I didn't see that 100% in my list.

It became an unhealthy thing because too many devs just put absolute shit in their trophy lists and I would force myself to grind it. Now I only play on steam and I 100% the games I enjoy, but if a game isn't worth it I just use steam achievement manager to give me 100% for peace of mind.

Forcing yourself to 100% a game and drag it out even longer when its something you don't care much about sounds like actual torture just to get more achievement points no one else looks at other than you.

So are these external systems important or not?

I was really addicted to achievements on 360. I'd replay games in other regions or play the shitty PC version on Games for Windows live just for more achievement points.

Then I though this shit really doesn't matter at all and I'm not having fun so I'll just play games wherever however I want.

But I was recently informed this is "the mark of a casual and a quitter" and "real gamers get the plat".

So should I be trying for the plat?

I used to have the most 360 achieve'os.
Me and my highschool mates used to compete
Then some kid called Jason would rent stupidly easy film-games like King Kong & Ninja Turtles from the video store that practically handed you 1000points for nothing.
Bloody Jason, it was around that time i stopped caring

Why would it be fun to do arbitrary shit for no reason and no actual reward? Just play the games in the way that's most fun for you and you'll get whatever achievements you get. No reason at all to care about the rest.

I would assume the fun is in the challenge presented and the reward is proof that you completed that challenge, either for bragging rights or personal satisfaction. Fun is subjective so while a lot of people would see achievements as pointless, others find it fun. Don't see what's so hard to grasp about that.

Playing video games.

What's the issue? What's the difference? Why seethe over people enjoying games?
Let me tell you the real issue you have; you suck at games and it angers you. You are mad that you aren't as skilled as some other gamers doing arbitrary challenges. You. Yes YOU, are a loser.

It's literally a manipulation of your cognitive bias towards needing to signal groupthink, achievement and conformity, except you're not going to get laid by the end of it.
It is exhausting.

lol, lmao even, they do, and they actually try to brag about it, but are usually met with either people not understanding any of that or straight up mocking it because dudes waste time on some non-tangible non-translatable (things/skills that can't be used or applied elsewhere) things
like, instead of hunting for trophies in some shitty rhythm game, learn to play a fucking piano, and don't do the conservative training where you just play other people's stuff, it's largely irrelevant to a hobbyist, but do the jazz improv, this shit will unironically land you bitches whereas the former will at best land you in your mom's basement

i like some achievements but others can go fuck themselves

basically anything that requires grinding sucks
ideally they include small challenges unrelated to the games own rules (like beating a certain level with a good time or not doing X)
i like achievements for finding easter eggs as well

i will NEVER play a long ass game on all difficulties just for achievements though fuck that
