True, Japan's always had that weird habit of making darker-skinned characters look more stylized and idealized rather than grounded. You can trace it back to stuff like Michiko to Hatchin or even older shows. It's less about representation and more about aesthetics. But yeah, once the writing and themes start revolving around pushing overt messaging instead of, y'know, making a fun adventure, that's when it goes off the rails.

Pokemon has been getting continuously worse for 12 fucking years dude. And yet the sales keep going up. It's safe to say that Gen 10 could just be rabbit shit in a box and it'll still sell at least 10 million copies.

I used to love Pokemon, but when I realized that everything was getting worse and no one was punishing Game Freak for it I had to drop the series. The shitty fucking consoomers who prop up this corpulent mess of a franchise are responsible for the dire state of the series as much as Game Freak is. I think the biggest issue is the watered down nu-pokemon artstyle that makes the characters look as generic as possible.
