Why was Nintendo's attempts at new 2D games in classic NES-born franchises so utterly forgettable? No one talks about these games, like at all. They had zero staying power. Why is that?

What are you even on about, Dread and Wonder were both great, I only played a little bit of Echoes because of performance but plan on finishing it on Switch 2.

I liked Wonder. The seed segments dominate the levels in a grating way but I still enjoyed it more than any NSMB game.

Dread is underwhelming, but I think a lot of that stems from 20 years of expectation.

dread was decent, especially after expectations were rock bottom with fusion/other M. Same with Mario wonder and the new super soulless bros shit.

Zelda Echoes sucks cocks though

Me and my wife played wonder together to 100% completion and we had an amazing time. Metroid was almost a 10/10. Playing Zelda right now so not sure how good/bad it is.

So you're wrong, OP.

Japan doesn't like Metroid, but it saved the Metroid franchise

Mario hasn't had a memorable mainline game in years

Not even the tendies can defend it, they'll pretend it didn't exist

Mario Wonder was a cashgrab hastily thrown together to make money off of people who saw the movie. Zelda runs like shit which is bafflinf for how simple it looks. Haven't played Dread.

Don't blaspheme stain New Super Mario Bros DS. That game is creative and has the best bosses in any 2d Mario. Blame Wii onwards for the series becoming soulless

Wonder made /v/ seethe so hard that they couldn't even say it was soulless and invented a new shitposting phrase "forced soul"
imagine making /v/ admit that a new game has soul.

That guy kind of had a point though. A lot of the quirky moments felt forced. The talking flower in general was childish even for Mario

you aren't "forced" to find it charming
that's why we have the phrase "soulless"
you could just say it's cringe instead

It is soulless. It's random for the sake of random with little thought behind it. In past Mario games there was often a deeper cultural reason for why the games were weird.

Super Mario Bros was largely inspired by Alice and wonderland with things like the focus on mushrooms.

Pipes were a focus due to Mario being a plumber.

Koopas were Mario's enemies due to
1. Turtles are underwater animals, and Mario is a plumber who works in sewers.
2. The kappa of Japanese mythology.

wonder is forced soul

Cringe and soulless and forced soul all describe different thing. Forced soul is a special kind of cringe soullessness. It describes consciously attempting to be soulful and in an obvious and choreographed way. You can't induce soul. It comes from creativity pushing against the walls of technical limitation.

They're 2.5D games that are generally run by management that isn't sufficiently on the ball to coordinate a large scale project.
>Dread is a completely disjointed piecemeal map where you teleport around constantly and pass through one-way gates
>Echoes of Grezzelda practically has interviews where they call the central mechanic retarded, but they don't have sufficient freedom to reject Aonuma's bullshit
>>713234418
>>713234608
It was still soulless, the correct term is "juice from concentrate".
It was only natural that eventually some manager would find another braincell to rub together and set the critiques against the recent soulless Mario games as a metric.

>Nintendo's attempts
That's the thing. They weren't their attempts.
They were outsourced.....

(Mario Wonder wasn't, however it was cheaply cobbled together using leftover assets by the b-team because EPD's main team were working on DK Bananza).

Nintendo hardly make anything in-house these days which is why the quality of their games has gone to shit.
>>713230172
Dread sucked.
Wonder was *OK* but it was just a rehash of shit they'd done 10000 times before.

Wonder, Dread and the Links awakening remake were all unironically 10/10's.
I hope we get more AAA boring open world for the masses and a supply of AA games that are actually fun to play.

I hate Metroid Dread. It's not a worthy Metroid game at all. You can't get lost in it even if you try to. It's weak as piss. It really made me realize how mentally ill Metroid fans really are that even I have higher expectations for their series than they do.

Dread and Wonder were both pretty good, IMO. My only issues with Dread were the load times and constant railroading back and forth between areas and my only issues with Wonder was all the pointless cutscenes and dialog and those houses where you were just given a wonder fruit after a bunch if pointless dialog.

I haven't played Echoes of Wisdom yet.
