I actually played the first couple hours on snes, ds and ps2 just to see which one was comfiest and I just like the basic 16 bit style the most. ds one looked the worst to me having everything split up into two screens.

What do you guys think about 5? Is it overrated? To me it didn't hit the way DQ4 hit me, and I have to wonder if it's because 5 was hyped up to be the greatest thing ever. I love the concept, but I feel like for this specific story, having a silent protagonist just doesn't work. I also wasn't a particular fan of the final boss having no real presence until you actually see him. To clarify, he's just spoken about and that's pretty much it. Other DQ villains like Corvus, Psaro, Zoma and Orgodemir had an actual presence/action in the world. I guess Calasmos did too, but everything about the past and his involvement feels too vague to include him with the others.

I only played a chunk of 8, but is that one also overrated due to nostalgia or is it genuinely THAT great of a game?

VIII is the only one ive played so far which has actually good pacing, memorable characters, great presentation, simple but charming story, and especially great level/world map design. it just hits all the notes a good jrpg should. the worst thing about it is its just another generic dragon quest plot at the end of the day, but the party members carry it.

1 isnt really shit, in fact I enjoyed it but its really basic at the end of the day. I think ff1 is a lot better. dq3 i really wanted to like, but the complete lack of real characters or plot killed the experience for me and I lost interest somewhere around the giant macguffin hunt. same deal with VII kinda, I enjoy the party members you got (even though best bro leaving to simp out was gay) but 100 hours of content with basically no real story tying it together besides "save this village, go back to the present, now go do it again" got boring around the 20th time i had to do it. XI wasnt offensive or anything but I felt like it was a worse version of VIII in almost every way, and act 3 was uneccasary and dumb, and I didnt enjoy the story either especially fake out character death which is one of my biggest peeves, also the music is fucking garbage. so far Im enjoying V, I really just made OP as bait to get some responses but it seems to be fixing my issues with the other games by having a way more interesting story so far (I have just got to reinhart after the time skip with harry for reference)

For the most part fair. I think 7 has one of, if not, THE best DQ villain. There's a certain point in the game where the story is just so damn good that you just want to see how it all ends.

I also really hate it when extreme events happen and writers decide to not commit to it. I also think 11 has the weakest music in the series.

I fucking suck at playing DQXi on Stronger Monsters. I get wiped out by shitter looking monsters because I ran out of MP to self heal after barely two fights in the first dungeon. Little Devils and Healslimes out heal my damage with Hero and Erik and I hate losing half of my gold on party wipe out.
