I was curious, when does a certain thread topic start to be classified as a general? I noticed there's some controversy with the deltarune threads and the master duel thread, but when new games come out there is typically almost always a thread up for it, for all intents and purposes wouldn't that be a general? But it is allowed, so I was just curious as to when a thread gets classified as a general, rather than just being a normal topic of discussion. As for this post I read that you're allowed one meta thread on the catalog so I figured I'd ask here, any help is appreciated, thanks.

there is no rule you just make a general
generally if there is a community of posters formed around one game there will be a general because at least one of those people will be like "i wanna talk to those people who play that game" and make a general thread to call them out.
you do have to know in advance that they exist and are currently looking at the board, so making a general thread for say, barbie horse adventures or whatever nobody actually plays or talks about will probably not last long.

when schizos and spammers and fags that smell exactly how they look like they'd smell get tired of too many actual video games actually regularly populating the video game board

don't give a fuck how annoyed you are at seeing the umpteenth flavor of the month thread they have more place on /v/ than twitter screencaps or actual dedicated rotating shitpost generals focusing on constantly making sure everyone that posts in them is always mad about something retarded

So basically, if a lot of people all start wanting to talk about one game generally that's when you'd start a general? At the same time, could there not also be posts for a particular game on /v/? Or is it if it becomes too frequent that it becomes a problem

Just to be clear I'm not trying to say I dislike any particular kind of thread or anything, just trying to figure out how they differentiate between just a normal topic that's popular or a general

Jannies are niggers and are mad Tony Fox isn't paying them to let them have 40 fucking threads, and too many threads get made because (no shit) the like, one game worth playing in a year and a half released this month.
See you when this thread gets nuked to make room for 7 more pedophillic ads for the shitty ass dankey kang game literally nobody actually cares about that they're shilling like it's already out because marketers fucking suck at their job these days.

A "general" is not just *a* thread. It is *the* thread. What you see with a new release is a bunch of people all wanting to make threads to discuss something about it. A general is the specific thread that everyone goes to for discussion, that they stay in until it reaches the bump limit, and from which they move to the next thread created specifically because the old one is full.

If you want to make the case about things constituting general threads while "flying under the radar" as it were, you should be pointing to the likes of the Morrowind threads we've been having since Tamriel Rebuilt got an update. There's usually just one that goes to bump limit and then another gets made. There's an elder scrolls general over on /vg/ but it serves a different purpose so no one interested in the threads here wants to do that there.

A general is like a discord server for the game. (Very tangentially related to the game at best).

I see, that makes a lot more sense, it's like the game just lightly flavors the overall discussion, but typically it's probably something unrelated being talked about

The problem with generals that lead to the creation of /vg/ is just they are ALWAYS present. They permanently consume thread slots on the board. Get enough of them going fast enough and they start choking out the normal function of the board.

Yeah, why they're banned is basically as a default generals (actual) pretty aggressively lower post quality and act as a means for low quality posters to be invited in since the incentives are entirely different.
Sort of unfortunately as a rule both the current administration and aforementioned low quality posters have an understanding that a "General" is any random thread about any topic that they don't like or meets some entirely arbitrary metric of "being too frequent".
Although admittedly that as a standard was sort of made for administrators to ban games they don't like very much.

There is no formal definition . When it has a baker, or a company having it's CSRs spam it, like say some of the expedition 33 threads that just use shit from the press kit.

Don't sweat the formality anon.

For the deltarune thing you need to realize that game is brand new and bump limits and thread rates are higher now duebto summerfags and potentially people coming in from xitter. This is also a problem for console warring

The unofficial idea is that if there's constantly new threads about the exact same thing, it should be offloaded to /vg/.
In practice this never happens of course, and thread deletion for this reason only occurs if the janny doesn't like the subject matter. If they do, it stays.
Welcome to /v/.

yes, basically

>At the same time, could there not also be posts for a particular game on /v/?
yes, sometimes with sports games it's better to make the thread on the board the game is actually about.
the racing games general thread on /o/ for example has been around for a very long time because it's a thread for car people who want to discuss video games about cars
every time someone makes a clone on /vg/ it dies out

Anon theres a new game from same universe that just released with a fandom that was so obsessed with the games that when markiplier and others played it "incorrectly" they were sent death threats to them and their families. Alot of them are here and the numerous threads per day are clear sign of that obsession and summerfaggotry stokes thar fire as school is out

Your knowledge on the subject tells me you know way too much to not know that the reason there's several threads is because the game finally came out this month and the jannies have been trying to bury it for Switch 2 shilling, and not just because it's summer.
You know, like when you see an enemy gamer look right at you while cloaked before trying to run into you while facing a different direction while in TF2

I'm sure it's incredibly distressing that a platform launch is being overshadowed by a stupid pixel game made by some nigga from Massatwoshits.
