Imagine you're climbing the stairs and trying to swing with your right arm. The wall is right there, you can't slash around it.
But if you're at the higher steps facing an enemy coming from below, you have the wider space of the external wall to swing and pierce from.

Every article I've read that tries to debunk it goes into pointless tangents like "castle sieges almost never happened anyway" and fail to present evidence on why it wouldn't be real.
The fact is that the majority of those structres were made with clockwise stairs, and considering that they buildings made to give defenders advantage, it's not hard to imagine this did cross the original architect's minds while designing them. There is no tangible proof in favor or against it, it just makes perfect sense.

This article was linked on a page that was trying to debunk the idea.
It's very clear that stairs were designed to be fought inside of, even if such events did not occur often. Suppposedly, it's also common for these tower stairs to also have irregular step lengths and heights, which can only be explained as a defensive measure.

This sort of engineering is not exclusive to Europeans castles. On Japanese castles, they made the floor loud and cranky on purpose, so nobody could possibly sneak around inside of it.
