I'm up to assigment 9 in Atelier Rorona and it hasn't really clicked
Should I move onto Totori, or accept the series isn't for me?

Not for you honestly. But that doesn't mean you couldnt begin with the dusk games..the dusk games are way more story and combat oriented.they are the peak for the series.

Arland is more about time management and slice of life.

Totori plays the worst of the Arland games because it's the oldest one. If you can't get to like new Rorona then the series probably aren't for you.
Meruru is the best overall Arland package despite lacking my fav tsundere Cory.
You can check Ayesha which resembles Totori storywise.
Anything beyond Dusk which falls apart in the last 2 games can't really be considered atelier.

Totori is more or less the same, Ryza and Yumia are drastically different but both are terrible games, you may try the PS2 titles which are easily the best in the series

I played Marie+Elie ps2 fantranslation. Alchemy there is barebones. Marie got remake a few years ago but I didn't feel like playing it. There's 3 more games which are jap only. Two got psp upgraded ports but still only in jap. Ateliers which were released in the west prior to Rorona play like generic jrpg.

Going to start Totori and see if my mind changes, hopefully I didn't waste $60 on the Arland bundle because the girls were cute
