i had no idea progression was locked behind shadow mario. i thought it was a shine count thing front to back and you needed around 70 shines to unlock the volcano.
i managed to ignore a shadow mario level and got a shit ton of shines, eventually looking up why i couldn't just beat the game yet.

and in that time playing the game i can say it's easily among the worst 3d marios, yeah

Gamecube kids have to defend every one of their exclusives in increasingly pretentious ways. Mario Sunshine is a d-tier platform game. Truly awful to play.

If Mario Sunshine had been released on N64 as Mario 64 episode 2, it would be hailed as one of the greatest games of all time, rivalling Mario 64. It would have the same heated debate than OoT and Majora's Mask have.
People only hate Mario Sunshine because it's on the Gamecube. NPC behaviour.

It would have been a better game if it had more of Mario 64's moves and fewer of sunshines, but the level design, shitty yoshi implementation, and blue coins drag the game down. Seems like people only defend it because it's a gamecube game. Never see anyone get this bent over something like Galaxy.

The shine sprites are entirely pointless gameplay wise and literally donโ€™t do anything except make Isle Dalphino brighter. I was in the same boat as you. Collecting sprites and wondering why I canโ€™t unlock the volcano. Turns out you just need to beat episode 7 on every level. All the sprites around isle dalphino, all the blue coins, are pointless and only exist to pointlessly pad the game out.

Would it have been better if Nintendo had added a shine minimum to unlock the final boss? It's a trivial change to make. Would that have pleased you? Why is everyone such a nigger here all of the time? The point of a game is to play it, not to beat it. I bet you cut your wrists collecting all those shines that you did. What a horrible, horrible time you had.

People hate Sunshine because it's a bad game with bad game design. Or are you going to sit here and tell me 100 coin shines kicking you out of the stage is good and the fact not every course episode will have enough coins for said sprite making you collect them over and over again until you do is acceptable.

/v/ would be able to enjoy games again if you all weren't severely, cripplingly autistic and inherently positioned from a contrarian stance. If you could look at games with fresh eyes again, instead of decades accrued cynicism. I can't even remember caring about blue coins when I played this game in middle school, but you've poisoned your mind with too much internet debate and video essays. Now you consider yourself the hero of video games with all the correct opinions, when you're really the village idiot, inebriated on bad moonshine.

What good is a decent movement system when there's barely any levels that capitalize on the fucking movement system? None of the stages make good on what Mario can do. 64 sure as shit did from the moment you entered Bob-omb Battlefield.

No anon, it's badly desinged, like the blooper thing on the docks? So you have to ride into the water track, do the time challenge and if you don't make it in time(which is never disclosed btw) it will kick you out of the level and take a life off.

And it's not even consistent, some shines let you continue close to where you died, others take you to the beginning of the level, others just kick you out forcing you to watch that dumb city shot then put you at the start of the hub, or you just appear outside the level.

It carries the entire game, I'm quite sure the fludd started as a dev tool which evolved naturally along game development, nozzles break the game pace so they mostly put them far from the intended road to the shine, but sometimes they are just there on the side, waiting for you to help you breeze through some bullshit.

And the levels being shapeless messes with no coherence make the movement shine(heh) even more, all the tech you can perform feels even more satisfying, it's closer to Mario 64 than many are willing to admit.

I kind of forgot cappy was supposed to be a character to be honest. His legacy is just being able to throw the hat to jump off of it.
I wish they did more with the enemy possession mechanic. It seems like it's supposed to be important, but it's never used very extensively.
