my verdict after 5 hours: It's really good, but very rough. The combat is satisfying, but I really hate that switch between two weapons thing that's so popular right now. Seriously, who the fuck is telling game devs that we want that? I want to play a CLASS. I don't want my progression tied to a weapon. I want to be a greatsword wielding knight, not some gay ninja that's quickswapping weapons out of nowhere. But, even though I don't like the fantasy of it, it's still fun. Character creator is really good, but I wish there was a way to upload a photo and have it recreate the person in the photo. I don't have hours to perfectly sculpt Kanye West's face, I don't even know how to do that. The exploration is great. There's a lot of interesting things happening around the map and I like how i'm not corralled into doing certain things. If I see a cool area, I can just go explore it, and probably find a side quest hidden inside. The game does a good job of making you feel like you're playing a hardcore mmo ,even though it's not.

Game feels like shit because latency affects everything, animations get desyncronized, fucked up dodge timings, phantom hits out the ass. It feels awful to play.
Melee has no chance of catching up to ranged classes in pvp, rangers can just spam ranged attacks while moving at full speed which points to a lack of game design competence.
It also looks like shit unless you play on "epic" quality which brings tons of inputlag with it, the game needs 2 more years in the oven at least.

Boss 1st phase:
1. The root in the middle.

This is an impressively disappointing pool of class choices.
Three melee classes, one mostly melee class with one ranged weapon, one mostly ranged class with one melee weapon, and one magic class that is pulling triple duty as the sole magic dps, cc, and healslut class.
I mean New World and TnL aren't all that much better in this regard, but at least they had free-form weapon selection which kinda gave the illusion of there being more variety than there actually was.

Why? It was outright stated and it doesn't feel bad to me personally. The animations and hitboxes are actually clean as fuck. The real issue I had was desync but I figured it was a server issue. Like sometimes I'd posture break a boss and as they're going into their downed animation they would hit me with an attack, or desync causing the animation to hit me when it shouldn't but that happens in Souls games too so I'm not going to hold it against them like it's an issue only they have. When the game is working right the animations and hitboxes are really clean and the overall feel of the combat and animations is really fucking good. There's a lot of weight and impact to the animations that make the buttons feel satisfying to press. I'd like it if it was a bit more complex like BDO with way more skills and hotkey combos but Souls isn't like that and I know a lot of scrubs would hate it for that just like they hated BDO like he who shan't be named did when he cried that you couldn't keybind things in BDO like you can in WoW.

I dunno, this game is basically scratching almost every itch I've wanted from an MMO. I don't want it to go away after this weekend.

What part of awkwardly frankensteining a single player engine into an MMO isn't janky? I'm one of the devs on the Dragon's Dogma MMO private server and it's janky as fuck with all the ways the single player design is awkwardly grafted onto a multiplayer title.
