Whats to get?
You are making a map of an area you haven't explored, humans have been doing this for thousands of years at this point.
It can be fun if the game heavily emphasizes the adventure aspect.

As with all (good) gameplay mechanics, it's supposed to cause enjoyment. If it does not cause you enjoyment, you are just not the type of person the mechanic was added in for.

It's a JRPG meaning all of its game mechanics are tedious repetitive chores which exist to maximize playtime.

Immersion. That's literally all of it.
I actually find it better than the usual dungeon crawler way to do it because you don't have to go into every room and step on every tile, if you see somewhere is a dead end you can just draw it and resume exploring.

It's just like wizardry anon, the only thing I don't like is that walls in etrian odyssey are a full tile instead of a line like wizardry, but that's just me, it's a good dungeon crawler that remembers exploration is half the fun of the genre.

isn't that the game? The game has no map and to win you need navigate the labyrinth and beat the boss in the end. Did the steam version disable that part or something

The steam version just puts the map on the side instead of on a separate screen below

does the game require you to draw an in-game map? or can you draw your own map on paper if you prefer

You have to use the in-game map for the first floor as there's usually a guard who won't let you proceed until you've properly drawn out a certain percentage of it but after that there's no reason you couldn't use pen and paper maps for the rest.

Finding shortcuts, mapping out resource runs, maximizing the distance you can travel before you have to head back to town to regroup. All of that shit is very fun when it's driven by a map you made yourself

Its like those ancient dungeon crawlers like Wizardry, except now the game supplies you with the tools to map it yourself instead of you having to buy a bunch of graph paper.

The game is about exploring uncharted areas and drawing the map is necessary in order to not get lost. You need to mark things like walls, doors, chests, navigational things like platforms, and so on. The series started on DS and this was a way to utilize the stylus and second screen. It adds to sense of immersion and players usually develop their own ways of mapping certain things. It also calls back to old dungeon crawlers like Wizardry and drawing a map on paper. Map drawing is only one among many other elements that makes this series so good however. Auto mapping exists for people that don't want to draw it themselves.

Youre probably a zoomzoom but nothinb was cooler than taking an irl notepad and taking notes for myst and to a lesser extent riven. This happened too in games like wizardry and ultimate suppisedly idk I never played that shit. EO is trying to recapture that feeling but in game. It actually takes more programming to make a map maker than to just have a premade map reveal itself to the player.
