Metal Gear
Why is the Metal Gear Solid series such an obtuse clusterfuck to play in current year?
Why does every game in the series have half a dozen different versions that apparently ALL suck ass and worsen the original experience in some way according to different sources on the internet?
I though getting the master collection on steam would be straightforward enough, but everyone says it's garbage and requires extensive modding to even get something similar, but still not close to the actual originals.
Why do some sources say you need an old out of production controller, otherwise the game doesn't work at all, while other sources say the controller does not matter?

I have a fat PS3 that should be able to play MGS1 and 4, but for the first game i have literally no idea if that's considered a "good" version or not.
I just want to play the four games. Preferably without having to fuck around with mods or emulators on pc.
Can someone PLEASE spoonfeed me which of these give a decent enough experience?

> 1 Playstation classic (PS3)
> 2, 3 HD collection (PS3)
> 1,2,3,4 Legacy collection (PS3)
> 1,2 3 Master collection (Steam)
> 1 Integral version (GOG)
> 2 Substance (???)
> 3 Subsistence (???)
> 4 standalone version (PS3)

Which of these are valid choices?
What the fuck is a peace walker?
And do I need a PS2/PS3 controller or not?

Please?

Stop sperging and just play the last remaster collection for MGS1-3, then play 4 on your PS3.

Literally just play MGS3 (literally any version is fine, but Snake Eater has the old-school camera, Subsistence has both), ignore all the autistic lore, and stop there. MGS3 is by far the best game and is entirely self-contained as it's a prequel

An obtuse clusterfuck? In the current year huh

Based.

You can play MGS1 and MGS2 if you really like MGS3 and want more (but worse). But ignore all the convoluted lore and timeline and take each game as its own thing.

MGS4 is just full-blown masturbatory pretentious hack drivel. MGSV is just a shitty NuHitman.

So you're saying the steam version (master collection) is fine?

Because I've read that it has
>fucked up / compressed sound
>fucked up / out of sync visual effects
>censorship
>altered dialogue
>something about features not working that require motion sensitive controls that were only available on PS2/PS3 sixaxis controllers

If all of that is bollocks then that would make things easier I guess.

How the hell is this a complicated choice? 10 minutes on google, not even, could tell you the difference between versions. Ask me how I know you weren't even born when MGS3 came out.

I don’t have any real experience with 1 on the ps3 so idk if it’s a good port or not. But it’s not that complicated. If you don’t have a ps1 than play the ps3 port. the IDEAL version of the games are on the ps2. play 2 on the ps2, play 3 snake eater on the ps2, and play 4 if you really want to but it’s not as good as the others. Don’t listen to autistic loyalists, 2 is a good game worth playing, it’s retarded to dismiss it completely just because snake isn’t the main character. if you don’t have a ps2 then I’d imagine the ps3 hd collection is the best option.

4 had some weird integration with the ps3 six axis controller yes.

There is no censorship or changed dialogue. Most of the sound and visual stuff is hit or miss and only really noticeable in side-by-side comparisons.

The controls are fucked up in the HD collection version of MGS3 or emulating the PS2 versions because kojimble had to base the whole control scheme around the PS2 having all pressure sensitive buttons, so you can't hold a guard without instantly slitting his fucking throat

Play in this order, PS2/3 games obviously require a dualshock2/3 for pressure sensitive inputs
>Metal Gear 1/2 (MSX)
Included in the special menu of MGS3 Subsistence (PS2/PS3 HD)
>MGS1 (PS3) or any PSX emulator, doesn't matter
>MGS2 Substance (PS2)
HD removed the skating minigame and has weird bugs like long codec loading times
>MGS3 Subsistence (PS2)
HD on PS3 has graphical glitches and removed an easter egg
>Portable Ops (PSP)
Fuck you, it's fun.
>MGS4 (PS3)
>Peace Walker (PS3)
Has an actual functioning camera compared to it on PSP
>MGSV GZ/TPP (PC)
Mods are fun

every button on a ps2 controller was actually analog. most devs didn't bother doing anything with that, but la creatividad isn't most devs. You'll want to play the master collection version of mgs3 on PC if you want a proper control scheme, because the ps3 HD collection version just didn't bother updating the controls at all. (this also affects 2 but pretty much all that means for that one is you can't slowly let off the weapon button to put your gun away instead of firing it, but you can always put your gun away by unequipping it, in 3 the new advanced CQC system was entirely built around the analog buttons and it's all fucked up without them)

MGS1: PS1 disk/Emulation>latest rerelease master collection with mods> MC with no mods>ps3 store>pc release

MGS2: PS2 substance> latest rerelease master collection with mods> MC without mods>>>>>>>HD collection on PS3

MGS3: PS2 subsistence> latest rerelease master collection with mods> MC without mods>>>>>>>HD collection on PS3

MGS4: Emulation/ps3

Peace Walker: PS3 HD edition (only HD PS3 port thats not outsourced)> PSP

I would heavily advise you to play the original console versions of each game (PS3 fat backwards compatability for ps1/2 work superbly) but if you can't do that either emulate or play the master collection with mods. if you can't do any of those just play the most convenient version
the original versions of each game (minus peace walker) are vastly superior because they not only have all of the fully intended special effects/controller functions but are the most responsive and least buggy versions.
Whatever you do, don't play the HD collection versions of mgs2/3, they are the worst versions to play no matter what
MGS4 can go either way and V/GZ you can play on the most convenient platform

the version of MGS1 you'd play on a ps3 IS the original, just through the built in emulator on ps3.
play 1-4+PW on ps3. you get SLIGHTLY worse version of mgs2 and mgs3, but not bad enough that you will be missing out. then, get GZ and TPP on pc.

HD collection ps3 version still has pressure sensitive controls because dualshock 3 still had pressure sensitive face buttons.

>dualshock 3 still had pressure sensitive face buttons.
I had no idea, I've only ever emulated PS3, I didn't have one (because it had no games)
