The first game is space opera game kino. Fuck every adhd riddled kid that complained about the mako missions and rpg elements. 2 destroyed the potential of the series and now there's basically no hope of bioware competently growing the rpg systems of the first.

I was going to say it's slightly overrated, but judging by the replies in this thread it's VERY overrated.
Stiff as a third person shooter, streamlined and casualized as an RPG
The best parts about it are the moments it genuinely captures a feeling of space exploration with the Mako or docking with an unknown space station.
Characters are ok.
A lot of the writing is Star Trek tier, and not in a good way.

How so? Maybe my lack of imagination, but hard to imagine what better tech would have improved. Maybe it would have made things worse. Limitations breed creativity and all that

Half of ME1 is a great space RPG in a cool setting.
The other half is copy-pasted planets with one out of four copy-pasted dungeons.

I'm saying ME1 wasn’t built around space exploration mechanics, so whining that it didn’t deliver on that is like buying a steak and complaining it’s not sushi. The exploration stuff was flavor—just enough to make you feel like you’re in this big galaxy before it throws you back into conversation wheels and corridor shooting. It’s not No Man’s Sky and never pretended to be.

Anon you buffoon, you goofball
I am saying my favorite thing about the game was exploring unknown planets with the Mako or docking with unknown space stations
Or any of the moments the game captures the feeling of exploring its universe.
I'm saying it DID deliver on that fantasy for me.

Also No Man's Sky is terrible for that feeling imo. It's not a space exploration game so much as it's a procedural generation algo exploration game.

Never played it, but from 2nd hand experience the first 2 are kino. An original attempt at a new starwars/startrek IP. Great dialogue which Bioware used to be known for. Major choices about which of your crew lives or dies. Very distinct races and characters. Even has inter-alien racism and genocide options.

I hold the unique position that ME1 indeed has the best atmosphere, ME2 is the overall best game because it has some "sandbox elements" to it, or "open world" elements perhaps is a more appropriate description. ME3 overall is just a complete dogshit game because it's very linear and the ending is boring.

I feel like 1 is only first with regards to story because it's the most consistent not because the actual story is that interesting. With regards to characters I always thought the characters were pretty meh and I love mass effect. Doesn't help that you can only talk with characters after missions and at some point their conversations just drop and you listen to the same stock answer. The romance also always plays out the exact same. Also basically no party banter in 1 and literally zero party banter in 2 and in 3 it's pretty easy to miss. Always thought that Dragon Age Origins did characters way better than all of ME. Way more conversations and being able to talk literally whenever youn want, party banter that dwarves pretty much the entirety of ME and if you don't like them you can pretty much kill all of them.

It's both. Mainly because the shit people rate highly about it is fairly retarded, like pretending the basic additive skill system or copy pasted guns with slight number changes are complexly nuanced. Or that it's good for biotics to solve combat and play the game for you on any difficulty.
>fuck up a huge plot point for Saren by never giving him his non-Reaperized model so like 90% of his scenes make no fucking sense, have to fix it with a mod
>Shep directly asks Sovereign what the Reapers motives are, and the writers basically just admit then and there they have absolutely no fucking clue so they lamely dodge it
>some big choices are very retarded and nonsensical, like allowing the Council to die under the expectation they would have no succession system and just let the Alliance install a pro-humanity Council in spite of just demonstrating how unreliable they are
I would say one huge advantage though is that ME1 is not afraid of letting players miss or skip content with dialogue. 2 and 3 love forcing weak shooting galleries while 1 often let you avoid combat altogether with interesting dialogue.
