Just finished this. Fucking masterpiece. On the level of Final Fantasy. Why did I never hear about it in /v/?! I thought this was the place for hardcore gamers..

It pisses me off that they only made this remaster to market their new suikoden gacha slop game.

I mean they never denied a chance for Suikoden 6. The main team, especially the writer of Suikoden 5 is still working there. I think the gacha is a side project because the 108 stars things work too well to not try. Give those 108 characters, 10 different skins and you get yourself 1080 characters.

The original artstyle of the 1st game is vastly better yes, but the translation was horrible, and this remaster comes with a faithful new translation. Also buying it will help us get a new game, but that’s up to you.

2 was always the most popular.

As well as the first two, 3 and 5 are worth playing... I'm not a fan of 3, i find it kind of a slog, i don't find the central conflict at all fulfilling and the battle system is a little too slow, but people like it i think. 5 is more of a callback to the first two but way stretched out and sometimes a bit sloppily written and hamfisted, it's not bad at all though.

The game more feels like a Suikoden II remaster and they decided on doing the first game halfway through without the assets. It's still fine, there's not really any other changes made besides a updated translation so it doesn't read like an ESL having a stroke and some very minor QoL things (like Blinking Mirror being a key item) and bugfixes (music playing, unfortunately Maranda glitch got fixed). Other than that, it's the exact same games.

Oh to be clear I think it probably is second best, I'm just criticising them relative to the second game really. Suikoden 5 especially is very long and drawn-out which could be surprising coming from 1 and 2, though I don't find it tedious like 3

It's been a while but yeah i think i remember the loading times in 3 being pretty rough, but it's really the slow pacing that kills it for me. It doesn't feel like much of anything happens until very far in the story and without spoiling anything the nature of the villains means there isn't the same kind of tension or intrigue going on

Plenty of people like it though so ymmv. I feel doubtful they'll remake the 3D games but who knows

So far what I'm hearing from the gacha game sounds SO GOOD.
>Finally we get to see the Rune of Change, maybe even the Circle Rune, since they're opposites.
>New character designs look good.
>Army Battles look like Suikoden V.
>Good Pixel Art.
>We get to see more of Odessa.
>Turn based battles
The problem is: It's a gacha. But all the rest? Seems like a new Suikoden to me. It's not fair...

I think Suikoden 1 is fun in some areas but its story doesn't really hit the same highs for me. And I like the way that S2 constantly emphasizes Riou's pacifism and the fact he's only in this war more or less out of obligation to his comrades via the various opportunities to quit, his weapon choice, his run being more for healing and even having to choose to stand there and let Jowy beat the shit out of you instead of fighting back at the very end.

I hate that the art/designs have that shitty LN/VN aesthetic. I suck at explaining it but there's a way that type of art tends to look from the faces to being overdesigned to the coloring where it all looks very flat and lifeless to me. They don't seem like something that came from Suikoden.

I talk about it all the time, zoomers don't like old games and just want to play whatever is popular. The only time they'll acknowledge older games is when they get a re-release and their favorite e-celeb gets paid to finally push them

Next best one is the series is Suikoden 5
Wild Arms and Star Ocean are similarly good series that get overlooked. Star Ocean also go a re-release so people paid it some attention.

You have a better chance of being able to dump the content of the games into an AI and have it spit out a sequel, than you do of the company legitimately making one in the future.
Nobody can write a story anymore which is a requirement for any kind of legitimate Suikoden game. They only know how to do parodies, irony, and generic mmo/gacha slop with no plot.

"PIGS could be here," he thought, "I've never been in this village before. PIGS could be anywhere." The hot flames felt good against his armored chest. "I HATE PIGS," he thought. Orizzonte reverberated his entie head, making it pulsate even as the 9 potch circulated through his powerful thick veins and washed away his (merited) disgust of swine at any time of day. "With fire you can burn anything you want," he said to himself, out loud.

I couldn't get into Eiyuden. The plot doesn't have much of a hook going in, and some early plot events set me off the wrong way the hero's village getting burned down but don't worry! Everyone escaped to the woods over there :)

Also I'm not some anti-woke agitator, i think it's often overblown but in this case the translators actually do need to be tortured & killed isis style.

The main writer of Suikoden V is still working in Konami, and he’s involved in the gacha, so you’re wrong.

And to be clear it's not just the localisers shoehorning in woke stuff but the general characterisation is often very obnoxious.

Why spend time and energy on a complex compelling story to sell a single game to someone for ~$70 when he could be selling skins/outfits to addicts for hundreds of dollars a month.

If it kills Kasumi then Kasumi gets to live forever inside of him as part of the rune. I'm sure she'd be fine with that.

No because both Victor and Flik don’t die. Only Gremio, then Gremio revives. How am I supposed to figure it out if the game itself doesn’t commit to it?

They're not that close to the MC.
The more close you get, the higher chances of dying you are. The rune itself has a personality, and choose the target.

Only legitimate hint at this was his father, but Odessa dies quickly after you get close to her, and it doesn’t make sense that your bond with her is stronger than Victor, and yes she did hint at romantic feelings for you, but Flik actually loves her and we never know if she did love him back, so even her feelings for you remain ambiguous, but I guess the tune choosing is a proof in itself. Then you have Ted, he fights you and die amidst battle, the rune did kill him yes, but the game confuses you still. Finally there’s Gremio, first he willingly sacrifices himself then revives in the end. The game fails horribly at explaining the rune’s curse aside from his father. The best thing would’ve been choosing a girl to love then see her die, or the party member who used the most dies.

>Finally we get to see the Rune of Change, maybe even the Circle Rune, since they're opposites.

who cares, original creator/director is dead and the series went off the rails after he left midway through Suikoden III. It's just Konami beating a dead horse like they've done since Suikoden IV.

I mean I get you, but he made Eiyuden and it was trash. Maybe he never had anything planned beyond 3, maybe what he planned was going to be trash. Mikami made RE4 and nearly all classic fans hated it, for example. Suikoden V wasn’t made by him yet people rate it as the second best and others as the best in the series.

It’s kojimbo who popularized this idea. After years people finally found out that Mikami wasn’t entirely responsible tor RE1, he literally wanted to completely lack a story, except Capcom forced him to add one, he didn’t even make the story but a guy named Kenichi Iwao. He created Wesker and all the characters, and the biological horror element. According to his interview Mikami absolutely loathed his work, and wanted to add a terminator like cyborg.

There's the issue that Gremio's spirit is still there at the end even after reviving him which calls into question how the fuck the revival actually worked.

In this sense it's kind of true because Murayama was the actual creator of the series and the main writer so the plot and all of that shit came directly from him and as shown the games without him had kind of weak stories that lose a lot of the complexity and heaviness of the Murayama games, especially II.
