my favorite beat em up was streets of rage for the genesis and the simpsons arcade game.

Any modern recommendations? Or is this another genre that got cucked by time like shmups

Played Streets of Rage 2 and Turtles in Time, are there any other games on the same level?

yeah, you're right, thank god the industry doesn't do any more remakes and remasters.

Streets of Rage 4 and Fight'n Rage are the peak of the genre. Absolum seems to be a solid entry in the genre despite the bland character designs and the roguelite elements.

Yeah the aesthetic doesn't matter as much as the mechanics, features, and content. I'll give it a shot if it otherwise looks good

There are many options depending on what you prefer that range from okay to great.

Are the arcade versions substantially different from the NES ports (which seem much more popular)?
Anyway I've been playing around in Punisher and AvP, if anyone here is good at those games id appreciate some tips

Unironically the blandest genre of all time. Despite growing up with neogeoRageX + full rom collection back in the early 00s, I still never managed to understand the appeal

They look simple and even braindead at first glance but they need some knowledge on crowd control and be good at keeping resources (like the bmups that use health for special attacks or weapons you pick up), some bmups are very challenging, specially if you're attempting a 1cc run (or just beating one with limited continues).
They're also fun co-op games that you can play with anyone.

1 - Levels 1 starts out the same on NES but the mechanics are different. You can "level up" and learn new moves the more you attack enemies. The levels become wildly different as the game progresses.
2 - Completely different on NES
3 - Completely different on NES

There are barely any scrolling beatemups on neoragex, certainly none that anyone considers really great.... Maybe Sengoku 3...
