Because enemy AI is also retarded, it just blatantly cheats constantly in ways you don't notice just to keep up
When the AI is on your side, it's much harder to disguise the cheating without the player noticing

That's not a case of the friendly AI being any dumber than the enemy AI though. The enemy AI does the same thing, the only difference is when the enemy AI bumbles into a room and gets mowed down by the player the game doesn't end
