Modern disks don't carry any game data anymore
They only carry a 500kb digital key that allows you to download the game virtually

Do corpos unironically think they'll make gorrillions of dollars from shit like this? Or is the game industry just a huge money laundring scheme?

The shareholder strategy is to keep investing in live-service games, no matter how badly they might fail, until one of them miraculously reaches Fortnite's level of success.

The thing about live service games is that you just need one to make it big to pay for all the failures.
So companies will keep trying. With Sony in particular, they got that lucky break with Helldivers 2 already.
