Steam estimates from those shitty analytic companies put SMTVV on Steam only at around ~300k LTD and hard data suggests that it still sold better on Switch than PS4/PS5 combined. Xbox sales are a nonfactor so even then Switch sales are still a majority, even if you only count base or combined.

The battle mechanics are fine.
The big levels you run around in are fine, even if sticklers wanted proper dungeons to return as well.
The demon selection is fine.
The real issue is the story itself. There's no choices in alignment until the end where the game stops right before the last 20 minutes to outright ask you which bosses and ending you want. And while there's a lot of side content, none of it actually ties back into the main plot, nothing you do affects the events that play out. Vengeance fixed both of those, but everybody that adopted the original early was left with a pretty weak SMT experience, especially when they shilled Nocturne pretty hard at the same time.
