Things get spooky once you get to the storage basement. Unfortunately the horror fades significantly once you meet some faggot guy in the last stretch of the game.

its good for the first 3-4 hours but then it just keeps repeating itself over and over again for another 12 hours.

I feel like horror games really benefit from being on the shorter side and adding value with replayability. Resident Evil nailed it with a 6 hour game.

So far PT and Visage are the only games that made me uncomfortable because the atmosphere was hardcore spooky so I was expecting hardcore jumpscares, and even then the jumpscares in those games are just normal jumpscares. I'm waiting for a game that is VICIOUS in its jumpscares. Psychologically disturbing by using certain frequencies and sound design to fuck with your brain as it jumpscares you, things like that. Vid related is sorta what I'm talking about, how the sound design is inherently disturbing to our brains.

I think I know what you're talking about. For me, water monster from Amnesia will never be surpassed, but it's effect wears off after you experienced it once.

Still, here's my top of spookiest moments from horror games:
First 3-4 hours of Fatal frame 3 (arrival at mansion and THAT cutscene at home), Fatal Frame 4 is almost close but not enough, still worth trying;
FEAR 2 scene at school;
Last sequence of "Devotion" game, same with Scorn;
Butcher's creek ending.

That's first comes to mind for what's really stuck in my head to this day, there can be something else, but i can't remember it now. Nevertheless, this games is much more better than any jumpscare bullshit.

Penumbra Overture/Black Plague and Amnesia The Dark Descent are more scary than Silent Hill. You can argue that SH has the better design in all aspects, from puzzle solving, combat to actual level design. But in regards to what made me terrified Amnesia did it best. What is also cool about Amnesia is that it had it's own engine developed for it with versatile modding support. Therefore so much good content for it exists and total conversions.

TDD lacks replayability factor in general but makes up for it with richer puzzles as opposed to the Bunker where it's a constant repeat of find gas - kill rats - explore - fend off the imposter - loot shit - open doors with bricks or grenades. Not that it's a bad thing though.

What monster (from any game) would you call "always scary"? For me its the bunker monster. I think increased unpredictability really keeps the scare on for long

Well that's a sure way to ruin the horror of everything. Just like watching Markiplier play something achieves the same effect of anti horror. Scare cam lets players gives you a bad impression of anything. Any horror game is best experienced as blindly as possible. Just like it is with a movie.

Same. I played the game when I was maybe 13 or 14 years old. I remember being very scared during the water monster part, but it was a "panicky" fear, and once it was over I felt relief. The storage room was scary too, but you're in and out. And then of course there's the "jumpscare" in the guest room. But when I got to the prison and saw it was basically a totally pitch black maze in the dark, no "safe" area, I couldn't do it. The stress was giving me fatigue. I didn't finish the game until years later.

The original Silent Hill has what you are talking about with regards to sound design but it is less jumpscare focused although there is a section with very, very intense scares.

It’s literally impossible for me to put into words how disappointed I was with The Bunker. The Amnesia with the pregnant girl sucked but whatever, devs can stumble. I adored Soma and would put it in my top 5 favorite horror games of all time, and the premise of The Bunker got me hyped perhaps more than I should have considering how lackluster I found the previous entry.

But my God was it bad. It featured the two worst cardinal sins in horror games: annoying gameplay elements (charging the flashlight CONSTANTLY) and an unscary creature design. I wished they leaned into the body horror a bit more.

I watched it years ago. As I recall, they bitch about the alien being too aggressive, not having enough stealth options as if there isn't a radial menu with a dozen weapons and tools, and about the game being too long (their one good point).
