It was, you felt it as a kid, the soundtrack was setting the tone. Pirate-stuff in the 90s was always when shit was getting real and dark. Still can't beat this game. I beat the other two just fine.

Back during the 2D era of games, platformers were often made for the hardcore audience. DKC was Nintendo's hardcore platformer, arguably their big hardcore game, at least along with Zelda. Nowadays, platformers aren't really popular with hardcore gamers anymore, so it makes sense to focus them more on the general audience. They still have hardcore games, like Metroid, Fire Emblem, Zelda, Smash and Xenoblade but they're probably never gonna make a hardcore focused platformer again because it would sell like shit.
