>>713324282the split in opinions for nords in game tends to be based on whether they believe ulfric wants to be high king to free skyrim from the empire and the thalmor vs being an opportunistic power grabber and how they view the events of the markarth incident
if he didn't use the thuum to obliterate the previous high king I don't think there would be nearly as much division over whether his challenge was honorable
for the markarth incident among skeptics he's viewed as having gone overboard with wholesale slaughter as well as drawing a lot of attention about what he was doing which brought the thalmor crackdown since before that the talos ban wasn't really enforced
supporters believe that having and using the voice to win the duel is valid and a sign that he has the right to rule as well as the strength to protect skyrim from the influence of both the empire and the thalmor if he was in power
they rarely bring up the markarth incident in comparison to detractors and generally treat it as a dindu nuffin when they do
in general I'd say the markarth incident just isn't written well enough (in itself and into the rest of the game) to make the right and wrong ambiguous enough and its a major part of what makes the stormcloak argument seem retarded
they could have simply had the thalmor being allowed to actively suppress talos worship in skyrim before that and the whole thing could go back to being an either or but the fact that they state very clearly that nobody really paid attention to the ban until they were forced after the markarth incident drew attention to it really muddies the dichotomy
