>tfw live in the desert and all we have is swamp coolers
Works great but you really need a big unit. Those little desktop ones suck. Doubly so if you live somewhere that's humid. During the summer we tend to average about 15% humidity so evaporative coolers are GREAT. Except the few times it rains. Then its just blowing 90 degree humid air into the house. Other than that, works a treat and costs WAY less than an AC since all it is is a barrel fan and dinky little water pump.

What a lot of people don't understand is that you don't just need cold air coming in, you need hot air going OUT. That's why ACs are positioned on windows or have an exhaust pipe that connects outside the house.

No because the only time they can do anything for you is when the air is dry and usually if you're somewhere where it's hot in the summer but cool the rest of the year you probably have high humidity. It only works in dry and hot areas. Otherwise get more portable ACs until you defeat mother nature.

AC is extraordinarily effective because it uses the evaporation and condensation of a coolant to move ambient heat energy from the inside to the outside (or vice versa in the case of a heat pump), resulting in far less energy consumption for the amount of cooling you get inside the building. evaporative coolers are a complete and utter dogshit scam because the heat energy is not moved out of the building, itโ€™s just used to evaporate water (far less efficient than coolant), and that water will later re-condensate once again inside the building, releasing the heat energy. do not get scammed by meme technology and use shit that just werks

Push comes to shove you can make due with those but you want to put it somewhere where that exaust pipe is as short as possible. You really should go for a window unit but if that is absolutely not a option then yeah those are okay. Just that exaust pipe is trying to get all the heat it gathered outside. If it runs all the way across the floor its just dumping most of the heat back into the room. So the less of that exaust pipe there is in the room the better. A window unit would be best but I get that isn't always an option. If it's a landlord thing keeping you from getting one open a dialog with them. Maybe you can talk them into letting you install one or maybe have them drill holes for the mounts or something.

If it ain't broke don't fix it.

I kid though. I live where evaporation coolers is a great option. They are way cheaper too buy, maintain, and run then refrigerated air. Like its legit all you need for 99% of the hot season. The only time they suck is when it rains but its usually cooler when the happens so ya just suck it up for the day. Past that though they work a treat here. We often have 100 degree days in the summer. I dont track the indoor tempature exactly but its usually around 73-75. I know I start feeling warm around 76ish. The evaporation cooler can do that no sweat. Draw in 100 degree air and cool it down 35ish degrees within about 6 inches of evaporation medium and blow it through the house. Works great and is super cheap on the electricity side and the units are so simple that anyone can maintain them no specialists needed. The only time you'd need an expert is to install one. Past that? ezpz

Look at a world map, dumbass. The southern tip of Spain is on the same latitude as Virginia or whatever. They don't need central AC because they still have more seasons than just summer all year like the southern half of the US.

Okay, you're not understanding this issue.
Let me ask another question.
If you leave the door on your freezer and refrigerator open, does the overall temperature of your room decrease, increase or stay the same?

it evaporates the water into vapor, which then simply re-condensates and re-releases its latent heat energy back inside the building. The only way it would work is with a fan blowing the moist air out of the building, but at that point why not just use an AC unit which will cool the building far more efficiently?

Oh, well you'll get the energy back once you condense the now-gaseous stuff back into a liquid. It's not going anywhere overall but you'll have nice cool moist air.

Well swamp coolers make positive pressure and does push the air outside. And its way cheaper to run than an AC since it's jist powering a fan and a little pump. There's always more dry air outside to kick a bunch of water into, cool things off, then push it back outside.

>even with AC and a fan.
If it's central AC then maybe you have an airflow imbalance. Airflow is balanced by properly sizing of the ducts and fiddling with dampers. If you feel almost no air coming out of the vent, then a damper could have been completely closed or a section of flexible duct collapsed on itself.

Other than that it could be bad insulation in the attic and exterior walls. Or your room is facing the setting sun, which can be partially fixed by putting foil or radiant barrier with blackout curtains over your window. I had to do this for my home cinema room since it faces the setting sun and it gave me control over lighting for my kinos.

>no, these are bad. theyre taking outdoor air, which is hot, and circulating it into the room, that youre trying to cool down, only to exhaust it again outside. im surprised theyre allowed to sell these
>canned response
the travel of the hose is minimal, and the blowers move a lot of air. My desktops and the radiator on my fridge produces more heat. Hoses can also be insulated.

Europe is mostly on a higher latitude. Some countries consider 70 F a heat wave and have people dying from heat stroke over there. I have my AC at 75 here in Texas and it gets 110+ F.

I think in practice that's probably the correct answer.
I was proposing a theoretical situation and didn't say anything about that, so the correct answer is stay the same.
Refrigerators and freezers take the energy from the container and put it outside, which in this case is the room in the process cooling the contents.
The net effect of opening the door means that no energy is leaving the room, and therefore is overall not getting any cooler nor hotter.
But yes Anon, you are probably correct in practice.

One trick is point the AC vents straight up so the cold air goes to the ceiling and falls back down. There is a bubble of hot air up there constantly fighting your AC normally.

They don't teach you kids thermodynamics anymore. This doesn't work, and even if it did you are taxing your fridge by constantly making ice to create a small cold spot by your fan.

>otherwise leave it running at a higher temperature during the day then lower it when you get home
This can damage some AC units. Cooling down air is easier than cooling down solid objects. When you let your house stay warmer during the day everything solid warms up. When you get back home and lower the temp, the AC now has to cool down the air AND the house. This can make the AC to run much longer than expected and cause damage IE longer runtimes increases the chances of the evaporator coil icing over.
