What even is level scaling, and why is it bad? Is it like the single player equivelant of SBMM (Skill Based Match Making)?

Enemies level up along with the player. It makes avoiding battles a viable strategy.

it's when enemies or loot changes depending on your level. it's an easy way to flatten the difficulty curve a bit and most RPGs use it to some degree. overhated mechanic imo

leveling up beyond human and material limits is bad and retarded. games should always find other options in slaying big bad beside NUMBER GOES UP. if they cant, it's just a shit game, just like DBZ is a shit book.

Level scaling cannot work when you have equipment and battles for the most part are optional
At some point you'll have equipment strong enough that the scaling falls behind
It's especially bad if there's very easy to exploit mechanics at the beginning of the game that make you stronger without you gaining levels
saucy

in real life, people level up when you do as well.

its bad because one of the core mechanics of rpgs is getting stronger so you can handle harder things. Going to an area and finding it impossible then coming back later and succeeding, or mopping the floor with things that used to be challenging, make you really feel that you are getting stronger. It is both satisfying as well as assists the narrative of growth. It helps make you feel that the character (remember its a role playing game) is getting stronger.

Level scaling simply removes that.
