The actual world is cool, there are tons of little secrets in the world and special little areas you can drive in to save time, but 90% of them never connect to the actual race tracks.

They even made an entire spin-off about making custom tracks in literally the most open-ended environment possible: real life. Some of the P-Switch challenges even use the gate idea to guide you using rings in some smaller SNES tracks (that only exist in their respective P-Switch challenge).
