The AI is so indescribably bad that it completely fucking fails as anything approaching strategy, either in the battles or on the campaign, and any single player "high level" play boils down to blatant AI abuse rather than anything tactical
Diplomacy system that might as well not even be there
Comically badly balanced unit buffs, god-tier army leaders, and magic, to where the actual army barely matters
Every campaign is just end-turn autoresolve spam by turn ~45 and the devs still find ways to make new campaigns that are even easier, and more braindead

And despite all that the game is cool as fuck and I love all the different races

A few sloptubers have made videos of it over the years, plus it was once delisted for a while due to music licensing issues or something, then got relisted on GOG which caused another minor wave of shilling.

Problem with AP is it's just a really mediocre TPS. It's a game CLEARLY built for pistol + stealth + hacking only for Obsidian to remember they were making an RPG so they tacked on other combat options.

Pros
>Has some of the best sprite work of its era
>Atmospheric as fuck
>Exploration feels incredibly deep as it fully utilizes 3D space like being able to climb up or jump into places that you feel like you shouldn't be able to, and it's often rewarding because the devs rarely leave empty space on the map

Cons
>Everything else about it from combat to story to quests to RPG systems

They haven't. Every game has been deeply flawed in one way or another. Some games just had positives that outweighed the negatives, but those days ended when Avellone was jettisoned, though some might say the few titles Sawyer worked on are still half-way decent.

Crazy that they finally let you hijack a functioning mech after like 3+ hours and there's two linear streets you get to go down before you hit a roadblock and have to get out again.

Worst part is, the mechs sorta feel alright. They could've easily pivoted this into having more mech gameplay and made a decently functional game. Imagine if every open world level instead had a mech you could hijack.

Still, going out with grenade launchers, heavy machineguns and tanks and deathclaw companions against mutant armies and scum of the earth is great. I'll probably replay it with one of the mods that make it much better one day; still have a whole archive of them on one of my drives.

not really suck or anything, but mediocre. It failed mostly due to too simple gameplay. Some gadgets can make you extremely OP and boring. it could have been a good middle ground between tactical and arcade designs with more challenges. the quick use of sync shot was pretty much the only good part about it.

the good parts? They nailed the settings and level designs. You are in a near future spec ops with top of the line gadget to fight against numerous weaker foes in different environments, until you encounter enemies with similar capabilities and become the hunted. The missions in Russia were pretty good examples. The HUD, animation were nice too

Game fucking rocked. Good gameplay and cool weapons and gear, the story was forgettable and the characters were shitty though. Wish they stuck through with it for Anthem 2.0.

>Terrible replayability

>Character progression makes no sense
Somehow I still love this game to death

Harvester. Story is good and I have a thing for FMV visuals from 90's, but some of the puzzles are convoluted even for a oldschool point and click, and the combat is so janky and badly done, whole Lodge section is just a pain to play.

I really like the mood of the game and the wide variety of playstyles. Also i really love the different mysteries. I will never forget my first Mars Colony getting obliterated by an Earth MIC corporation. Also now that i am looking at my old screenshots i remember that there is a ton of cheeky stuff you can do like for example you can put your solars inside of a dome to protect them from the dust.

this game might've been the peak of obsidian's writing honestly. too many rpgs treat dialogue like
>1. I think you're cool. [nice option, +10 relationship points]
>2. I think you SUCK! [mean option, -10 relationship points]
>3. I think you're cool and also sexy [BEGIN ROMANCE]
but AP actually makes you think about how you need to approach each npc based on their personality because a lot of them will think you're a kissass if you go with the nice option
the amount of branching paths and consequences for choices is really impressive too, you probably have to play the game at least 3 or 4 times to see everything, it's like a tighter bg3 with kino spy thriller dialogue instead of cringe millennial fanfic dialogue
the gameplay does fucking suck though, if there's ever a game that needs a remaster it's this one
anyway, to answer your question: picrel

I could give entire GDC/TED speeches about the flaws of the 343 era but if I ignore the IP it's hamfisted into I can enjoy it.
It almost assuredly would've done worse without the IP's name propping it up. There's just something about having too much speed/defensive options that isn't a winning formula. Same happened with Crysis 2 and 3.
Crysis Wars had that big mode with a lot of other elements to counteract the over all effect of a player spawning with too much power.
Still, it's fun and especially now as a mere part of the MCC instead of the thing drawing most of the community and trying to hold it up, it adds enjoyable enough variety, similar to how many modes before it changed rules heavily.

It's worth mentioning that you don't always want to make them like you. For example you can provoke Marburg to fight you in Rome, if he hates Mike enough.

They never have. They made shells or outlines of good games but the people they had in charge of negotiating contracts were so fucking bad at it that they always found themselves in situations where they only had X amount of time to build the game but the game they wanted to build would have required X+Y Months. It really is project management where they faceplant and they faceplant on that every fucking time.

Anything good theyโ€™ve ever made was built on the back of someone else:

KOTOR 2? Set in George Lucasโ€™ universe with BioWareโ€™s gameplay systems.

New Vegas? Built on a universe made by Black Isle and gameplay systems and assets made by Bethesda.

Alpha Protocol was a trainwreck whose only redeeming quality is that it handles choice and consequence better than any other RPG.

Actually this line of thinking is why gaming discussion is so shit nowadays, people can't differentiate what they find fun vs what's actually good. That's why you see some schizo constantly having a crusade against some game on /v/ because he didn't like it (but everyone else did) so he can't just accept there's a good game he doesn't like, the game has to be shit and he has to let everyone know.
It wasn't like this back in the day. In like 2009 /v/ everyone understood STALKER was shit. But it was incredibly fun shit. People loved it despite the shit, because it was a unique experience and setting.

Yeah the combat is braindead, but I find it very comfy driving around the overworld and the characters have some the best chemistry out of the whole series. And I like when Noctis starts to be a mopy cunt and then Gladio immediately shoots him down and stuff. Makes Noctis look like a dork like Cloud in the original FFVII

Those video essays and ranking videos shitting on this game can eat said shit. There are far worse mainline FF games

Pretty hard to find a game like that cause usually I just tend to think people who disagree with me are wrong
I guess I'll go with pic related. Yes it's pretty linear and repetitive but the combat is fun to begin with and it looks great. It's just barely short enough that I didn't get annoyed
