Eric is saying that as an artist your aesthetic sense can change over time and you can improve your art in ways you couldn't even imagine in the past, which is true.
Toby is saying that sometimes it's useful to make a part of a work of art unappealing on purpose, because ugliness itself is a useful aesthetic tool, which is also true.
