Why are young men expected to look up to this guy?

John isn't, by any means, a positive character or a role model. Characters lived in borderline distress, material and spiritual.

Throughout the entire game John Marston was a dumbass who constantly made the worst decisions and got fooled and manipulated by people frequently.
He's pretty much a retarded cuck, yes.

We don't know if this was said just to be mean to Marston and not because it is true. We kinda know that Arthur had something with Abigail but not to what extent

I like John because RDR1 is a better game than bloated friend simulator RDR2. I like the feeling of a lone cowboy adventure in Mexico. It's a real classic spaghetti western.

To be fair, he fit in really well the rest of the cast. Particularly the side stories, where apparently every single person is competing to be the dumbest motherfucker in the West.

Honestly though, the entire, "The Old West is shit and everything goes to shit, and everyone's life ends up miserable," really soured me on RDR by the end. It's like Rockstar saw Unforgiven and decided the dial had to be turned to 11 and any sense of nuance and subtlety had to be thrown out the window. Come to think of it, they pretty much did the same thing with Max Payne 3 and copying Tony Scott's Man on Fire style.

no, if you played the game the whole narrative was centred around the fact that he was irredeemable

>you're mad about what happened? well the package was a gift for you, so checkmate - i win the argument, and so its all your fault
>im gonna run off with your boy and only getting in massive debt, destroying your body to build a home for me will bring me back
>you are going to do what! bounty hunt?! no way. i dont care if we cant pay for this house

isnt literary the point of the game the fact that he fucked up beyond redemption and has to do dangerous jobs to keep his family safe and stay alive another day?

what's the point of having heroic protagonists if you aren't meant to look up to them to some degree? why not have every main character in fiction be a rapist cannibal serial killer?

you're taking this the wrong way. you think I'm saying that you need to idolize characters and use them as father figures or something. all I'm saying is fiction only exists as a meaningful art form if it conveys something about the human condition. so what purpose do fictional characters serve if not to remind us of important life lessons?

to be a fictional character?
fiction doesn't have to be le heckin wholesome life lessons, it can also be shitty people doing shitty things, and facing the consequences of their shitty actions, like blood meridian
maybe marvel is more your speed

Because that happens in real life which is often what fiction is based on. Especially Blood Meridian which RDR is borrowing from heavily, like the anon earlier has mentioned

well they don't necessarily have to, but it makes for a better narrative in my opinion
maybe instead of consuming vidya narratives you should read books (or watch kinos) and maybe start writing yourself
