IMHO, it's an emphasis on exploration, puzzles, and lots of note-taking (e.g., Animal Well), as opposed to a plethora of boss fights and intricate combat mechanics (e.g., Hollow Knight). Most games in either category will do a little of all of the above, of course.

Good puzzles are really hard to design.
Most puzzles are binary and filter people hard. Gameplay gives you various options and is flexible, puzzles you either solve or don't and get stuck.
If you make puzzles relying on intelligence - then they will be impossible for brainlets and too simple/boring for smart people.
If you make them rely on scavenging-exploring for clues/"keys" then they bore everyone with no patience or low attention span = and that's majority of youth.
And the final nail - we live in the age of online guides and wikis, so everyone stuck or just losing patience would just look up a solution online ruining the game for themselves and would tend to do it more if they resorted to it just once, because its in human nature to chose the path of least resistance and no one wants to waste time being stuck on a puzzle.

For most games puzzles are trite affairs. They’re these short moments of slight resistance to foster this illusion of adventure even though they’re the kind of puzzle a toddler solves with wooden blocks. The same way le epic combat is just pushing buttons with timing so forgiving a geriatric can solve. It’s all perception, presentation, like a theme park ride. I am le epic adventurer.

It's just some meme term that people occasionally use for games with metroidvania-esque gameplay that focus on the acquisition of knowledge as progression tools.
Outer Wilds is probably the perfect example, there's no actual movement upgrades or new tools you can get and technically every single location in the game is immediately accessible, you just don't know how to yet.

I 100%'d Baba blind and I got hard filtered by the Bunny endgame.
Getting all the babies is just impossible. There's too many and they get far too convoluted. All the main bunnies were doable even if some of them were fucking brutal and probably harder than anything in Baba, but the babies are a different thing altogether.

Those still rely heavily on actual found upgrades so I don't know if I'd count them for this despite the puzzle focus.
I found Toki Tori 2 in my steam library recently, probably from an old humble bundle i guess, and that definitely fits the bill. Can technically do anything and go anywhere right from the start, only stopped by you just not knowing how certain mechanics work yet.

The whole thing about Metroidbrainias is that instead of progressing through your character unlocking abilities, you progress by learning new knowledge. The natural consequence of this is that if you start a completely new save file after beating the game once, you could take a lot of shortcuts or maybe even skip right to the end of the game, because the "keys" needed to get there are still in your head.
Outer Wilds, which you can just turn on and beat in 15 minutes right now, is a good example. Same with The Witness, where you don't need to find whatever simple puzzles teach you mechanics since you already understand them. I'm assuming Rain World works in a similar way.

>>713332778
Knowledge based gating. You already have the tools to pass a gate, but you might not know how to apply them until you are given a direct example.
It's similar to a Kojimavania, where progress is gated behind knowledge or meta-actions outside of the game itself, such as putting the console on a hotplate, unseating the cartridge, checking the box or plugging your controller into a different port, actions you could have taken at any time simply by virtue of being a human being in an unsimulated environment, rather than actions corresponding to more conventional input, like pressing a button. Of course Kojimavanias are basically non-existent now because you're not living in an unsimulated environment anymore because you can't always fuck with game boxes or consoles anymore.
>>713336776
The presence of guides means that you need to hide the presence of signal, the player shouldn't even have the notion of being able to progress until it is made clear to them. The average player is just going to assume they are missing an item otherwise.

Yeah I wouldn't really put them under that label either. You can sequence break a bit with knowledge from a previous run, but you still eventually get walled by am actual upgrade so get or later.
I don't count using glitches to sequence break for the record.

I'm sorry anon, but it has to be asked: Is it woke?
It has the vibe of a game where you decypher old writings about how the ancient people lived in harmony under a matriarchy and were wiped out by evil colonizers

I adore The Messenger but I always think it's a bit silly to bill it as a Metroidvania. It's a straight platforming action game for the first half and then a platforming action game where you revisit levels for the second half

Metroidvania is such a bad and casual genre. You could just play hollow knight, ori, and la mulana then never play anything in the genre again and miss nothing. It is the absolute worst and most casual genre of platformers. Even collectathons have more meat to them.

I feel so bad for its creator that this is getting ZERO attention because it's a super mario world romhack and there's zero overlap between mario autists and metroidbrainia autists. I feel so bad when I see absolute gems like this being completely unknown.

It's a huge love letter to all the best games in the genre and it does so many cool design things that impressed and delighted me but... you know, spoilers.

The best way I can shill it without revealing anything is it mixes many design things from la mulana, outer wilds, riven, tunic, mixed with so many clever ideas of its own, I ended up with almost as many screenshots, weird collages and pages of schizo scribblings as la mulana.

That he managed to do something this deep on the super mario engine is insane. There's so much effort, thought and soul put into this project.

Please trust me if you're a la mulana autist, play it, without a guide, to the true end, it's a wild ride.

Found this in my stream library randomly a few weeks ago. Cute little game. Only a few hours in but some of the puzzles are clever and I liked going beach to the start and realizing I could have climbed that left cliff right at the start of I knew how to.

Yeah, seems like a very bizarre choice. I have zero interest in mario romhack shit, I wonder what kind of autism you need to think a puzzle game in a tedious execution based platformer is a good idea.

Super Metroid is the only good Metroidvania. Why is castlevania even lumped in anyway. At that point Zelda is a metroidvania, if we’re gonna argue 3D games can be metroidvania.
Say it with me. MOM.
METROID ONLY MATTERS.

how can they be better. Ender lilly has only like, 10 bosses, and like only 2 first was hard. Lilly has like, good soundtrack, and good controls. Ender magnolia has even nicer controls, but worse soundtrack, and not much bosses too.

magnolia was okay but i mean this games are not better than Hollow Knight.
