Switch 2 couldn't use an OLED panel because there are no VRR supported OLEDs at that size.
Similarly, miniLED at that size doesn't exist and would cost more than OLED to manufacture at that size plus massive R&D costs since it'd be custom order part.
So for a screen this size you can either have an OLED or edge lit LCD with VRR with no in-between. PC handhelds are exactly the same. Nintendo clearly wants to release Switch 2 OLED down the line for $500+ when we'll have mobile VRR OLEDs, work on which is in progress.
As scummy and greedy Nintendo is, the display being mid isn't a cost saving measure just the reality of what's available on the market.
If you want to see an example of Nintendo cutting costs to make more per each console look no further than the SoC being fabbed on 8nm. This probably saved Nintendo $20 maybe $30 per console in BoM and is the cause of bad battery life. That and the tiny cheapo low density battery despite Switch 2 size easily being able to accomodate like double the watt hours.
The screen actually is a big surprise and Nintendo supporting VRR and HDR on day one was unexpected. Credit's where credit's due, even for Scamtendo.
