On a technical level, probably Galaxy 2. But you only get to have that magical moment of something completely novel and breathtaking once.

1 is better, the space aesthetics feel the strongest in it.
2 is basically just a glorified DLC with more levels by comparison.

2 by far has the better music AND gameplay

Hard to say, 2 has a great finale with the grand master galaxy however most of the green stars are stupid and bloat the game. Meanwhile 1 doesn't have as great of a send off.
1 also has better music, hub world, and powerups. Yeah I'm going with 2.

2 is the better actual game with a much stronger difficulty curve. 1 has the better aesthetics by a country mile though.

Odyssey is a sequel to 64 and Sunshine's sandbox style 3D Mario, Galaxy and 3D Land/World are more linear course clear 3D Mario games. This comes straight from Nintendo.

Galaxy easily

I hate how restrictive the progression in Galaxy 2 is. Nintendo forgot the whole point of the star system, to allow you to pick what you wanted to do and skip the ones you didn't like, but Galaxy 2 put way to strict limits on what you needed to do to progress so you were forced to do almost every star no matter how much you hated it.

I look at Mario Galaxy 2 in the same way that I look at Lost Levels. It really doesn't add much new, it was just a collection of unused/unfinished ideas from the first game and it shows. It just feels like you're playing Mario Galaxy 1 again but there's a level with Yoshi in it.
