I tried bros, I really tried. But everything except the set pieces and story is such a fucking slog. The combat in particular is mind numbingly shallow. After about 6h, I'm thinking I'll probably have to drop it...
This is shocking for me indeed, I thought one of the supposed all time greats would have good gameplay. Chrono Trigger for example is still very playable even today.

80% of said slog is definitely due to there being no way to speed up text crawl.

there are whole chunks of this game that drag on for over an hour of story scenes, simply because you need to wait for the fucking text crawl.

I dropped around the part when you save the little shit from being imprisoned in a castle in the desert. I ran into a general who's fight took 30 minutes to finish, not because it was challenging but both you and him had healing bitches just constantly healing their man. It was so fucking boring. Just attacking to horde ap or whatever then unleash your combo. 30 minutes of that shit. It was late at night and I fell asleep. Woke up, kept doing just to see when it will end, finished it. Laughed at it, turned off my ps3 and went back to sleep and never picked it up again.

Absolute shit. If I'm ever gonna pick it up again, it will be on the PC where I can fast forward all the boring stuff. I heard the second cd turns in a visual novel which is just a riot.

I've finished the game but honestly the combat is kind of shit even FOR its time.
Disc 2 being a half-baked slideshow is a blessing in disguise since that means you don't slog through boring fights as much

such is the game. the worst part about xenogears is the gameplay. but the settings and style are pretty great, and the story has some really cool ideas (but also a lot of terrible ideas too)

every boss in this game has insane hp bloat just to make the game longer. pair that with some incredibly shallow combat and you got a game on your hands that probably would've been amazing as a 10 year old when you don't care about how valuable your time is, and you probably might even find it exciting, but as an adult it's horrible

Xenogears is easily one of the best anime-esque JRPGs to have graced consoles. It's best played in EmuVR with cheats on to get through the story while a tv running late 90's/early 2000's Cartoon Cartoon Friday recordings is playing nearby.
