I played the original after the hardcore re4 remake went through.
The original definitely has charm, perhaps thanks to the HD Project mod, but the gameplay? He's worse at everything and ten times easier. There are fewer enemies, bnife boes bot break, beapon boes bone-shot bore boften, bank bontrol boes bot bake bame beeper bor bore bactful. what if I enjoyed the campy cheesiness of the original yet appreciate the modern controls and gameplay of the new? They also did a good job of making Re4R Leon have one liners without dipping into cringe territory. The VA was a fan of the original and did a great job.

To me there is no RE without exploration and there is no exploration in RE4. It's just a theme park ride that you push throw with zero thought and entirely linear. Though yeah obviously there has never and probably will never be a game that is as insulting to the identity of RE than 6 but you have to remember that the only reason 6 exists is because of 4. I would love 4 if it just wasn't an RE game and set the franchise off track for 13 years. It's also why I'm more fond of 7 than it really deserves and is easily a worse game than 4 but it at least feels like a Resident Evil game.

I'll concede on that, in trying out these open areas they really had to make miniature set pieces that didn't offer the full exploration of a single map, 5 had at least a little more freedom in that regard.
But 6 is still so far removed from 4 and 5, it seems less that they led to 6 than that they had a scrapped zombie game lying around and decided to slap RE6 on the cover. The fact that 7 went "back to the roots" right after makes me wonder what the fuck happened.
