>>713393226>That's not true. They stopped doing that after SA2.No. There have been many attempts over the years by Sonic Team's higher-ups to try and get the character greater popularity in Japan, and it only ends up working once in a while (see: SA1 and Frontiers).
Sonic X in particular was a project to try and make Sonic more relevant in that region, and only ended up getting a third season because of Sonic's typical popularity in the west. One could also argue that 06 was another blatant attempt, since it's basically just an HD repeat of SA1's general structure, which, again, was the last time Japan showed real interest in the IP.
In truth, Japan seems to only care about Sonic when the given project barely resembles what's typically expected of Sonic (basically the IP just does not appeal to them on a fundamental level). I'm fully expecting Frontiers' sequel to not do as well in Japan as Frontiers itself did, since the devs will likely walk back on a lot of Frontiers' non-Sonic elements (e.g., the bland environments and the alien-ish enemies/boss designs) to meet common fan criticisms, losing Japan's attention in the process. Maybe some stragglers will stick around for Sage, but only if she's featured at the forefront again.
