Smash's core gameplay would have to be dumbed down and it's philosophy (and main appeal) of simple gameplay would be destroyed with the introduction of a true 3D space.
Bottom line, It simply does not feel as good to combo in free 3D (in most cases).
But, I wouldn't mind being wrong.
