Easy, for some odd fucking reason Blizz tought Cataclysm Classic was a good idea, when the entire point of Classic is playing the original release before all the wacky changes, not just going through the expansions again.
Runescape works because the content it adds it's its own thing, the intention isn't to eventually become Ruenscape 3 classic

OSRS was never WoW size huge, plus no one cares enough to shit pot about that game ""dying"", as no /v/ zoomer plays it.
WoW Classic meanwhile fuels the avrg zoomers love for hating things, making it easy to hate and talk shit about it, even tho it's still very fucking alive.
modern /v/s definition of "dead" means "anything that isn't in the top 10 of steam", and even that isn't good enough.

OSRS built on top of what made old runescape fun and brought forward new content designed in the same style.
WoW Classic was released, then left to rot as Blizzard went on to milk every expansion after in a desperate attempt to keep the money rolling, completely missing the opportunity of building a new version of WoW that actually recaptured the original audience with new content made on top of the solid foundation vanilla had.

Besides the whole "you sat down to do internet" thing which was big, what I miss is how you simply met and added randos to your flist, some of them potentially becoming friends forever (like in my case). OSRS was on it's deathbed for years and the PVP scene + RMT (real money trading) gambler scene helped plug the holes on the sinking ship with their fingers. It only had a resurgence when the developers got enough support to start adding new content to the game and now it's more or less thriving.
