Let's be honest, this particular Yoshi game is superior to any 2D mario game, even if all other yoshi games are shit.

original Yoshi's Island release date: August 5, 1995 (Japan) ... in a few months Yoshi's Island will be 30 years old.

It's one of my favorite games of all time and I take issue with OP's assessment.
Mostly because they're so damn different. Yoshi's Island was a much slower and deliberate game. Fluttering trivializes a lot of platforming that a 2D Mario moveset would struggle with, so it makes up for this with exploration mechanics.
Does that make it better than Mario World? I dunno, maybe. But how do you weigh things like the art and the music? I love them in Yoshi's Island. Other people think it's kiddy shit. Both are fair takes.
Just like the game as it is, not in relation to other games.

May I be honest for one to three seconds? Yoshi's Story and Yoshi's Wooly World take a big dump on Yoshi's Shitland

Like all classic SNES games, it's great and looks fantastic with wonderful music and aesthetic, but is also so braindead easy that it detracts from the game a bit
Must have been a reaction to the NES and its ballbusters

Yoshi's Island was marketed as a sequel to Mario World but it's not. Backtracking or even staying in one room for too long are unique mechanics to YI while MW was more about constantly going in one direction with very few and simple minigames. Also, I have tried to replay YI and was barely able to finish the first world: I wasn' bored but I just can't enjoy it anymore.

No, it's okay. It's not superior. Also it set the precedent for making all future Nintendo games for babies.

Do you think it was Yoshi's Island or Yoshi's Story that really started that trend? Either way I miss the days when Nintendo games were more about challenge.

its a platforming game with a hover jump that makes all the platforming easy, and an action game where you have to watch the aiming circle slowly mouse over your target instead of being able to manually aim like in literally any other run and gun type game from the entire console gen

it looks pretty and has very catchy music, but I'd rather play gunstar heroes

Even with the storybook presentation and baby hauling, Yoshi's Island still had a sense of challenge.
Yoshi's Story on the other hand went full baby game and ruined the character of Yoshi forever.

The platforming is definitely not easy in some levels, because you have to still doge shit.

There was that monkey level where countless monkeys spit seeds at you from ahead of the screen. The platforming is ok.
