They might have been able to unseat Nintendo as the runner up if they hadn't fucked up with the 32x and Sega CD, but they had no chance at beating Sony. Sony was a much larger company and could afford to take a loss on each console sold, and since they already owned factories where CD players were made, it was much cheaper for them to add the CD functionality to the PSX than it was for Sega to add it to the Saturn. Then Sony repeated it with the PS2 and the DVD. It was Sony's anti-competitive behavior that ultimately did them in.

If SEGA somehow won then that means consumers gravitated towards more classic styled video games. Arcade like games will be made for the audience.

Seeing how this isn't the case there is no way SEGA could win or the future of video games be good.
