>Tendies trying to pretend this shit was good/acceptable for an RPG

This must be the result of huffing Mario fumes because only a brain damaged child would think Quest 64 has any merit when you compare it to what the PS1 got in terms of JRPGs. Which is even stranger because the SNES had plenty of quality JRPGs too, but N64 kiddies latch onto the absolute dogshit that is Quest 64.

Here's just a random example from my YouTube feed (among many):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1_ajjhiP0yE&t=404s

Love? LOVE!? It's not a complete game nor a good one! It's not even a complete thought of a game! Quest 64 was 15% done before they shipped it! What the fuck is wrong with N64 kiddies!?

one thing I remember from early N64 days was why couldn't we just get a single RPG that played like Final Fantasy. They all had to be special and unique. Couldn't just have 4 niggas in a row. Wouldn't really get something like that back until Symphonia, and even that's not entirely the same.

fuck you nigga this game was cute. it had cute anime characters and some cool magical spells. it also had some kino atmosphere. was it barebones? yeah. especially compared to final fantasy 7, but if you were a kid who just played what you could get your hands on, it was pretty cool. not everyone gave a shit about muh console wars, you know that.

Something quick: Every JRPG up until Quest 64, maybe there's a game that doesn't, I don't know, but Quest 64 was the first one I ever played that didn't have a money system, which removed one incentive from ever doing combat.

You made me remember another thing real quick: When I would finish battles on the overworld, without realising it, the game had spun me around and I didn't even know it, and because everything looks the same, I would run ALL THE WAY BACK TO THE START without realising it.

not OP but here goes
== why people shat on quest 64 ==
>it was hyped to be this huge flagship rpg for the n64, with a huge world and multiple characters to control, but failed miserably at delivering that
>the game itself is barebones, with no armor or weapons to find, with no economy at all (you get items but they're all free, found in the world or given by "shopkeppers"), and very incredibly repetitive combat
>the meat of your offensive capability is magic, and that is incredibly weak if you don't spend absurd amounts of time grinding
>in this game, your stats improve as you use their associated skills (e.g. the more you walk, the more your agility stat increases. agility affects the size of your ability to move and dodge attacks while in combat; therefore you have to leave your console on overnight with a rubberband holding the analog stick in a 45 degree angle so you can have the character run in place and build his agility stat so the game can be bearable enough to play)
>accuracy is one of the most painful skills to upgrade; it starts out shit and stays shit unless you directly land a hit on an enemy; but because your accuracy is so low, a good 50% of attacks miss starting out; you literally have to fake it till you make it with this skill
>magic spells themselves are cool in terms of spectacle but most of them are fodder until you get the higher level spells
>at end game, earth and water are meta because you get the magic barrier and healing abilities, which trivialize the game
>the story was generic dogshit (but still kinda cool 2bh)

Tried playing it, and it's not a great game. It's not the worst slop I've ever played, but I don't quite get the fanbase. or its dedicated haters for that matter.

Wasted potential. If they put in a multiplayer component, or even just a 2p mode, it'd be very cool. Maybe squeeze the wide open world together so it's not so empty and dead, and it'd be ok I think

I am old enough to remember how tendies used to defend Quest 64 to their dying breath during the late 90s.
A lot of them grew up playing SNES RPGs and were so hungry for RPGs on the N64 that anything that got released would stand out. If Quest 64 released on the playstation it would have faded out and forgotten by time. Nintendo Power gave the game a rather lukewarm review (6.5 iiroc) and they got a lot of hatemail for it. I am not surprised that modern tendie youtubers are coming out of the woodwork to defend this game. It was an insult to owners of the N64 that got this trash while playstation got 20+ quality RPGs.

You know the tendie thirst for RPGs was strong when Tales of Symphonia was a million seller while other Tales games on other platforms couldn't even break 100,000 sales overseas.

Oh god, this game was fucking shit. I can't believe anyone tries to make you think it was good. The only real way to complete the game is to level def and physical attack, then use the earth magic to make yourself immune to damage. Trying to play with the other spells is just simply impossible as they all do shit damage to everything. You are going to smash things with your stick for 99% of the game.

Unless they're similar to Symphonia and have like, optional party members, more than one way to walk through the World Map, an affection system that lets you build a girlfriend/best bro over the journey, it's really hard for me to play an RPG in 2025.

I don't give a fuck about whatever e-celeb shit OP is parroting, but this game put an unpleasant start onto my perception of JRPGs because it was the first and only one I ever had as a child.

Although I "can" play RPGs now as an adult (played WoW in my teens), I just can't get myself to play any JRPG these days even with the chance (pirating and shit). Though I wouldn't blame Quest 64 for it, just RPG progression in general feels like a boring chore.

Note that I never went past defeating the first boss in the forest, I just save the game every time and call it "the end". The music and atmosphere is really comfy but also very sleepy hence why I never bother going any more forward because everything fills me with boredom.
I wish to actually finish the entire thing one day, but it just feels really sad. Also I skimmed through a longplay in the past and the game doesn't seem to become any more exciting.

Quest 64 came out over a year after FF7 though. And just a few months before Ocarina of Time too (it was an ACTION RPG, granted, but for the tiny scope of N64 RPG offerings, that was enough thematic/gameplay overlap to attract players and to ensure that Quest 64 didn't stand a goddamn chance with how minimal it was).

They managed to sneak some QoL changes to the japanese release because they had more time to work on it.

The revisionism that Castlevania for the N64 was great is also part of this, I don't know why, I'd say Quest and CV64 could be good games but would require signidicant changes, like CV64 gets the atmosphere down and I actually liked the character designs, also I like the soundtrack, Quest 64 is more just a good foundation for babby's first JRPG, like Guardians Crusade but Guardians Crusade was fully realized.

It looks like they just lost their current build and source code, they showed off more advanced builds at trade shows and then suddenly the game goes backwards by a whole year, there was potential there but final build killed everything off, there's an alternative world where this free form semi open world JRPG landed a sequel on the N64 and became a defining genre changer on the Gamecube embracing it's open world and dynamic NPCs.

I neat it smacking stuff with my staff, and I think there was some hp drain move you could add to that. Shouldn't be how you beat a magic based game. And the Nintendo Power articles about everything the game contains (3 party members, for instance, when you see those NPCs standing around but they never actually help) just shows how butchered it was.

Why would you really compare Quest 64 to any JRPG when while pretty rudimentary Quest 64 was years ahead of your standard JRPG. Was it a masterpiece? Nah, but like most games of the 5th gen it was lovingly janky and couldn't live up to its potential.

the gbc version was better because it was fast instead of early 3d slop rpg slow
the n64 game was an average rpg, and psx had enough bad rpgs where you could tell what average was

Know any other games that play exactly like this one, but are actually good?

Nintendo got rid of Rare because they were never good, and you know what? Good riddance to them.

holy shit this thread IS STILL UP
I played Q64 A TAD BIT cuz my brother is deadset on being straight-edge his whole life and just BUYING the WHOLE n64 library with his job moneys.

I thought it was okay for a little while, then it got really boring and not worthwhile. Even if I had this back when I was super-young, it'd take me years to finish, guaranteed. The MAP SPINNING N SHIT WAS REAL CONFUSING SOMETIMES, definitely agree with that.

yeah all I garnered from magic when I tried learning about Q64, is that Wind beats everything until youre maxxed and have to level something else, like Water.

I dont super-mind it when there's a vanilla, baseline fuck-you accuracy check that peters out over time, I find it pretty endearing in a ugly pug-design kind of way, and pugs are cute.

>party members in the game
>theyre just NPCs that dont actually help or join you on your adventure, but are still labelled in a meta sense as "party members"
unclean feeling, desu.
