Mendicant friars are a thing in western history. The Hospitallers were probably the biggest example of this.

Considering most monastic cults in tamriel come from Cyrodiil, there's literally no reason to be surprised from local monks being more the kung fu type.
The akaviri potentate was a strong cultural influence on the province.

Mendicant and military orders from medieval euro history would fit the crusader class more than the monk tb h.

What would you make a monk do? Copy manuscripts and books? Provide scholarism? Pick up a hoe and sickle?
>>713426841
Military order knights would fit in more with the crusader/temple knight classes.

Who cares?
Traditional martial arts is now known to be ritualistic choreography more than a combat sport.
A modern MMA fighter would cremate any Shaolin monk from any time period.

Traditional martial arts are hardly traditional when you consider they all got effectively destroyed between 1800-1950.
Hilariously, all the shit they chide westerners for were extremely common in their own schools before that point.

>what would you make a monk do?
I would make them healers or nothing at all, just like how a fucking fuller or courier doesn’t have a fantasy class. Fact is, some fantasy writers were cool enough to know they wanted shaolin monks in their settings, but everyone else doesn’t know what they’re doing or why they’re doing it with this class

Basically japanese martial arts have a gap in the meiji period where they weren't practiced due to government policies resulting in most of them dying outright due to lack of successors, and the rest getting watered down to almost just the ceremonial bits. Nowadays the most serious schools aren't that different from HEMA in regards to approach and historical accuracy.
For chinese ones it was more complex, but essentially still just politics discouraging or outright banning them, leaving only non-violent larping. Just as a combination of many political forces over a long period rather than just very specifically the central government going out of its way to undermine the practice.
SEA is a whole other case, what with MT and flip shit being actually still decent, but I'm not knowledgeable enough to even tldr it for them.

Oh, and if you were wondering why the jap government hated that shit it's because it came to power explicitely thanks to those very same practices, and it wanted to avoid losing power in a repeat civil conflict.

Because it’s an example of a fantasy trend of western clergymen who are pugilists. Oblivion’s explanation is suitable but the trope is drawn from fantasy traditions
