Undertale, FNAF and Minecraft were made by 1 guy. Omori was made in RPGMaker. Doki Doki Literature Club was a free VN that eventually became an iconic franchise with the dev now having a net revenue of $6 million.

Unless you are incredibly passionate about making vidya, then it's pointless to compare yourself to any of those people. Even lazy fat fuck Notch put in far more effort than the far majority of wannabes ever could, and that's not even factoring in the early vidya indie advantage. It's far easier to get into vidya dev these days, but it's monstrously more difficult to make any relevant money or fame. If you are living in a first world country, you are probably more likely to profit off working some shitty assembly line job than by spending decades of hard effort on a game that might not even pay out at all (and of course, you'll need to spend years grinding skills, which are much more difficult to obtain as you get older, while also paying for yourself, since you can't easily make money off vidya anymore, so the problem arises from both directions unless you are some kind of vidya messiah that is willing to go homeless and program his dream game entirely from public libraries).

there's actually a truth nuke hidden inside the shitty op

you can't have artistic integrity aka SOVL when there are a lot of people working on a game, what you get at the end is a product for mass consumption. i would argue that the SOVL scale with the number of people taking decisions on every single aspect of the game.

that why rpg maker games, indieslop, vns (and also older aaa game where teams were smaller and more cohesive) are actual art, unlike the algorithm-driven aaaslop that gets pumped out nowadays

as for the answer to op's question
>You have all the time in the world to learn and create. You're on your PC all day. Why aren't you making the next big hit?
because i can't. as in don't have the talent to do that. neither do 99% of people. and i would also argue that the world needs less slop and not more, so unless you have a very strong vision/passion and a strong desire to share something with the world, then you shouldn't even attempt making games (also let's be honest, if you were then you would've already be making one)

also i'm not talking about making an asset flip and hoping to get lucky because a streamer picks up your shitty game and you go viral. that's way too risky from a purely business standpoint and, as you can see from OP's post, most people don't know what survivorship bias is

>anon, what's special about your game?
it's simple adventuring fun. Think classic Zelda progression with Dragon's Dogma beat'em'up style combat and ledge climbing. Nothing special I guess but it's not like a lot of games like this are being made nowadays either.
>why are you making it?
I find that coding mechanics, making assets and designing levels is fun. Been having more fun working on my shit than actually playing games for a while now.
>what are you trying to tell us with it?
nothing? My goal is to make a game that's fun to play, nothing else.

I could be wrong but could probably use smoother camera. It should feel kinda floaty, where it "dampens the bumps", and it overall reacts with a delay, smooth. It's the best compromise between "giving control to a player" (sm64) and the fixed camera of RE 1-2

It's hard, but it's not impossible. I'd say that Balatro is a recent success story. They had passion for the process of making games, and they got lucky with a formula/ideas (gameplay) that resonated with enough people. Allegedly they weren't looking at other games much, so basically most of it was from inside the dev itself (so basically not taking inspiration from others can sometimes be good, but it doesn't work every time)

They don't yet but there is also a morbid curiosity of watching a developer carve their way through learning how to design something. I've played enough streamlined games in my years that I occasionally want to play some jank-ass bullshit.
Budding minds tend to think that they know more than they do and will ignore most standards and conventions. And I take some kind of twisted pride in watching that unfold, it reminds me of when I started doing gamedev back in middle school.
Solodev isn't an easy process and requires a single person to wear many hats, you can often tell which ones they're best suited for but seeing how they make up for their shortcomings in other areas can be endearing.
Bad games can still fall out of this process, but thats true across the entire industry.

"Get chased by one single monster" short horror game...in second person.
That is to say, you see through the eyes of the monster. You can only see yourself if the monster is also seeing you.

anger management
kinda like the Crank movie, if you stand still and chill, you die, so you have to keep fucking stuff up non-stop until the end of the level

A combination of some of the Souls style "previous attempt phantom," summoned help, and other death mechanics. The player has 9 lives and each attempt happens "simultaneously" so that after you die in a level/before a checkpoint/ on a boss, that attempt data is replayed and interacts with the world as you play your next life.

Basically the point is so that the way a boss fight should play out is you get 1/9th of the way through the encounter with your first life and then starting with the second you need to chain combos with previous actions and then surpass the next 1/9th of the fight. Sort of like a segmented speed run but your sum of best splits are doing shadow clone beat downs to things.
