Things start happening five years after Sephiroth is thrown into Mako, so if Jenova's in control it waits after being thawed for 55 years to do stuff assuming it was inert for the previous 2000. Five years makes much more sense, if it's the time Sephiroth studied the Lifestream, because he's the first, who can't dissolve into it due to his Jenova Cells, overcame Jenova and was whisked to the Northern Crater. Things only starting to happen once Sephiroth falls into Mako is a hard coincidence to swallow. The second clue is that the Black Materia plan is a overtly complicated, HUMAN plan, rather than a straight one, where Jenova starts to infect the populace en masse and guzzle the Lifestream.

Okay I guess the ending is as good as place as any. For starters I want to say that conceptually, the idea of making Cloud even more divorced from reality because of his denial isn't a terrible idea. Because Sephiroth proves definitively that it's possible to bring in the dream worlds into reality. Zack and Aerith, 2 dead people, are able to just wander in and fight alongside Cloud. But these fucking writers insist that death is a real thing Cloud must deal with. Cloud is even able to take objects from dream worlds into reality. So it's not a multiverse, except for the times it is. In OG, Cloud tells Sephiroth that he doesn't give a shit about his autistic lore because he's grieving Aerith. Only for Rebirth to decide Aerith's death is the perfect place to put autistic lore!

"Clone" is a poorly chosen term the game use to designate every poor fucker that Shinra tried some variant of the "Sephiroth Recipe" on.
Basically anyone injected with large amount of Jenova cell is called a Sephiroth Clone. It never end well.
SOLDIERS are created with a very low amount, but Shinra has always been searching for methods that would allow to increase the dosis.

This is gonna be a tough read for you guys because it will imply remake is more consistent and better written than the original.
In the original game, jenova/sephiroth activate after Cloud gets into contact with jenova in the shinra building. Basically a "THE TIME IS NOW", remember that line in the cargo ship? Well, one could assume that Sephiroth was waiting for cloud or an adept clone to be functional so he can get the black materia, otherwise it feels a little too fortuitous. Which leads to breaking out, freeing Cloud and start the reunion. However, theres a problem with this. If cloud has jenova cells with him, why didnt know Sephiroth or Jenova know any of this? Sephiroth/jenova supposedly have control over Cloud but he didnt know? Also, a little detail, Sephiroth, to attack you, starts to toss you pieces of Jenova, but feels a little counterproductive, dont you think? If his goal is the reunion, why is he tossing you pieces of jenova for you to destroy?
Well, the remake fix it. Sephiroth already knows Cloud is fully functional (hence why Tifa in rebirth says "but why come back just now after 5 years", thats literally the point of the line) but not broken, so thats what we see him try to do in Midgar through hallucinations.
Instead of have Jenova break by itself JUST when Cloud gets there, Sephiroth starts to move the Clones from around midgar to the main building, and we see this in Chapter 8 and in intermission, there are clones pointing to the shinra building. Jenova is fred by Sephiroth using clones and we see this at the end of chapter 17. And what we are chasing are clones carrying jenova. We no longer fight jenova pieces, but clones becoming Jenova hosts, like the cargo ship.

Might be true for those who played FF7R back on the ps4 but this recent wave of people who played Remake/Rebirth on ps5/pc have the dummiest arguments.

The game works better when its not fully clear who is in control. Even if Sephs ego transcends and gains control, he is still doing what Jenova wants to do, and that is, wound the planet and eat its lifeforce. And then what? He would have traveled through space to find another planet, just like Jenova.
Sephirot behaves exactly like Jenova would, having adopted Sephirot as a persona.
The story is stronger if the line between the two is blurry, it adds a level of eldritch horror to Jenova.
Hojo being so certain of it is something that I took as for the posibility of how incredibly good Jenova is at impersonating and replacing people. We have to remember, the only ones that could face Jenova were the ancients. Everybody else was deceived.

Shinra has been such a massive enemy that the fact Sephiroth easily beheaded it is a shock to everyone. And no one knows how to take it. If Sephiroth took it Shinra then he must be an ally to the Planet. But Cloud and Tifa know full well that can't be true. Sephiroth is a complete wildcard by the time you leave Midgar and no one knows what he's doing. Why the fuck couldn't Remake keep it in its pants and respect that mystery?

Sephiroth displays the ability to force the dream worlds and reality together the moment Aerith dies. Too bad he accidentally included the dream worlds that dead Zack and dead Aerith were in and they decided to help Cloud out. So if Sephiroth's stupid plan to invent eternity is going to work, he's going to need a way to subjugate the rebellious souls within the Lifestream.

I first played FF7 when I was 9 but I first got a real grasp of it when I was 15 and gained a real appreciation for it in my mid 20s. OG Cloud remains my favorite character ever and I don't think anything would change that. I was just hoping to see that happen with updated tech rather than what we got.

When you're injected with Jenova, it starts taking over your entire body. At that point, you either get rejected, turn into a Jenova monster, or transcend it and take back control over your body.
It's not a clone in the traditional sense, it's like going in reverse. You end up becoming a clone of Jenova but you start as a separate, distinct individual.
