I have a garden and I think it's actually more difficult to farm in vintage story than in real life.
In VS the soil's nutrients are completely drained after one season, if you don't rotate crops every single time or layer it in fertilizer it turns into a wasteland. In real life aside from certain pests and viruses this doesn't happen that quickly.
In real life there are many plants where you can literally forget they're even there and you'll get a harvest anyway.
VS plants feel like prissy babby specialty plants that need constant handholding. Meanwhile in reality you can throw potatoes in the bin and accidentally get a harvest. You can have a squirrel eat one of your tomatoes and shit seeds in random places that give you more tomatoes next year with you even doing anything.

At least building is simpler. Imagine if you had to make sure everything was level when placing blocks.

League was the right place at the right time, a complete clone of a game it required no creativity at all, with the most bland and stupid characters every designed, but it was one of the first FREE games that took off. I'm American and I grew up playing Dota and all my US friends where waiting for Dota 2... I spent a month in Europe and every dirt poor Eurofag was playing League because it was free. The poors of the world flocked to League.

Nothing about League's success was due to Riot's leadership. They didn't design a game they cloned one. They didn't create a good business model they just added loot box gambling to their Dota clone.

Minecraft might have a store nowdays through Bedrock but calling that liveservice is really pushing it. Many still play java and the majority of Bedrock players don't feel the need to pay for anything on there.

Nothing like that exists on the market cause Minecraft wasn't made in mind with that and no one else actually dared to directly challenge Minecraft. But this game here had all the Hypixel and Riot funding and extremely ambitious plans. Which the game would need cause in order to compete with Minecraft you will need to be atleast on par with Minecraft in terms of content and scale which is pretty difficult considering how old Minecraft is with all those updates and mods already existing there.
So they had to develop actual tools to make modding for Hytale easier than Minecraft modding is. They needed as many zones and dimensions as Minecraft has. As many passive and aggressive NPCs and mobs. And so on. But while they kept developing their game Minecraft kept getting updated. They weren't just playing catch-up - they were in a race and Minecraft would just keep moving forward. Which means plans have to change mid-development - you have to promise even more things - add even more systems to make your game more appealing. And at the end you are left with nothing after years of development time cause Riot ain't no longer seeing an end on that tunnel. Especially with the super big Minecraft hype being over for now.
No way the game was ever making its development cost back.

My philosophy is that the scope of the game cannot require more than two years of work. Whether you are working alone or with a team of 100 people, it doesn't matter; if you don't finish the game in two years, you are doing something wrong.

Note: if a game is successful, however, you can continue working on it. Free updates are a totally viable way to make a living from your games, and there are several examples of successful cases like this: No Man's Sky, Stardew Valley, Project Zomboid, among many others.
