My gf (female) and I love it. Make sure to get a dock so you can hook it up to a TV. I like using it for Souls games and emulation mostly.

>Anything I should know
Performance on it is good for what it is but it sorta sucks balls compared to a normal PC.
Battery life on this is comparable to gaming on a regular laptop on a bat which is not a lot, so you better buy a power bank for it (and check if it supports power delivery).
Its a bit heavier than it should be ergonomics wise so after 6 hour gaming session your hands won't thank you.
Lastly I hope you like Linux finagling, cause deck has a lot of it

Ultimately it's a 720p machine. It can run many games at 1080p, but expect to use FSR at 720p for beefier titles.

if you want less headaches, stick to Steam Deck Verified and Playable titles

now, damn near everything in playable on the Deck, except for games with obnoxious anti-cheats, but those things that arent, mainly only PC games, might require you to do more tinkering than your usual PC game

then again, is there any other way to play X-COM: UFO Defense portable? dont think so

Well first and foremost is that you basically can't buy them right now, they're out of stock.
But as for actual pertinent advice assuming you DO get one.
Emudeck is kind of a meme and it actually kind of sucks to have literally fucking EVERY game you would want to emulate as steam library entries. You can mostly get by just installing retroarch or some other libretro frontend, especially since PCSX2 FINALLY updated stable so the libretro core sucks a lot less now.

I say this as someone with hundreds of games, just on steam alone.
I would probably enjoy my steam deck WAY less if on top of my already fuckhuge library of steam games I had to dig through EVERY single catalog of retro games I've backed up over the years.
Them having their own per system pools in a different library is way more preferable.
Hell it'd be annoying if even just the 58 Sega Genesis games I got on steam in 2011 for two TF2 Keys were their own individual entries in my steam library

Anon, I get it, but you have to keep in mind Windows and Google are able to keep as much of a market share as they have because it's kind of not really reasonable to expect that kind of trouble shooting out of users and most will run active damage control if anything is wrong with either of those things first.

Only Tendies would be excited to play Cyberblur at 30 fps

Switch 2 running Cyberpunk better than the Deck is a such a silly thing to get hung up on since Deckfags are mostly people who already own PCs and wouldn't bother playing a slide show version of it on their Deck anyway. Heavy AAA gaming was never it's strong point, more of a novelty, a "hey it can do this, that's kinda neat". The endless library of lighter/older games + emulation made portable was the real selling point of this thing

Are there PC games you don't feel like sitting at a desk for? I use mine for AA JRPGs, platformers, and console ports like Halo MCC and Shadows of the Damned. I'll also use Steamlink for the games that fit that bill but don't run on the Deck, like CoD Zombies or Rise of Ronin. I'll throw the Nintendo ports on here later, and maybe BotW/TotK if they can run mods.

If you have a proper solid gaming rig set-up and are going to mainly be using your Deck at home, look up how to set up Moonlight/Sunshine for your deck. It's like a better Steam Link with no latency and lets you enjoy your deck's portability with your PC's performance. Plus you'll get full 6+ hours of battery life too which is fucking great.

I mean not necessarily graphically demanding games but more stuff that you just think is 'neat'. For example playing a roguelike with heavy kb input like cataclysm dark days ahead and it works really well because someone in the community took the time to make a keyboard layout for this game with contextual radial menus for every kb shortcut and its actually incredibly intuitive. Now you have a great in depth roguelike on the game that games the library for 8 hours. I had a similar experience with starsector. Another great game and perfect fit for deck that works because of shortcuts and radial menus

SteamOS is so based that the deck community fixed years long issues I was having with Arch. I expected a bunch of faggy redditors to hit you with the ole Ubuntu "Why would you do that dont do that thats stupid" but nope, simple githubs with easy instructions.
Also Emudeck and Retrodeck are trash, get the retroarch cores from the nightly buildbot, drag it onto steams retroarch, and now you have retroarch emulation with cloudsaves

It doesn't have the tendie exclusives but those don't even seem worth it as of this year. Kart world was mid

With a dock it's essentially a laptop, the Steam Dock ain't that great, you could probably get a better one with HDMI with an usb c connection
You could also just install Windows on it, or get an SD card and put Windows on it, it would be a bit moot though since the read write speed is limited (so don't think about getting anything past A2 SD card type)
Performance is decent but don't expect to play newer stuff on anything but low, I don't exactly care about this but some might

Judging from the post quality on here /v/, you wont get a proper answer here, so its better that a deck user should either ask on Deck or Arch linux forums instead. Or /g/ idk.
I agree that the Deck community is very active and helpful, and even a guy with half a brain could get an solution spoonfed to him if he asks nicely
