OP is a shitter but Mihaly being so scripted was stupid
Although the trouble with no scripting whatsoever is that you end up with the Mimic fights from the DLC that you can end almost instantly if you know what you're doing so it's important to get a good middle ground sometimes
That being said if you're wasting that many missiles on Mihaly where it's a problem then you're probably just stupid

This is how bad characters are in this game. I can't even remember them they come and go and nobody can even tell you what their personalities are. You can tell they were shoehored in since I can remember all of Spare but not any of these bozos. Not something to tell my son about.

For best results you want to hold locks until you can maneuver into a straight on angle on the enemy's ass or nose. Firing with their broad top or bottom facing you, or if they're already pulling a hard maneuver will usually end with them outmaneuvering your missiles tracking before they even get close.

100%, killing most of Spare and then just dropping the rest all for a bunch of normies was a waste. Especially when it's the perfect setup for character shenanigans if they ended up merging Spare with the LRSSG instead to shore up losses. Putting the professionals in the same squadrons as all of the criminal dipshits. I mean, if i was running long range, risky, probably suicide missions, that's where I'd want the cons to be.

There definitely are ACfags in the air force, there's that one picture of the guy with his copy of AC04 with him in the cockpit and AC music regularly shows up at air shows
But the only AC quotes they'd be using would be with each other, even if everything wasn't BVR these days it's not like your enemies would ever be on open channels

It's not even just the OST, it's the way it was used.
That moment in mission 19 is genuinely epic, in the proper usage of the term.
But yes, the final dogfight against Pixy is probably just as good. I wouldn't put AC4's last mission on that level (that belongs to Stonehenge Offensive) and then AC5's final mission.
But I'd say that Lighthouse and Zero (the mission) are just in a league of their own.

my brother in Christ... "locked on" means the radar sees the target, and has cued a missile to it.
it does not mean it's a good shoot. let me put it this way. let say you are using a rifle. just cause you can see the target through the sights, does not mean the shoot is possible.

6 was a comercial failure in most respects. Don't blame them for, when given a shot to revive the franchise, they went with that they know works and is still good.

Actual contrarian. Not even saying the other games are bad but, that's just pure contrarianism.

It is not contrarian. The game is passable but it is also another example of reviving the IP and changing it too much. As such it is the worst one in the series for me. I had more fun with every other game in the series when I was growing up. And I had more fun with pic related than AC7 so no it is not just nostalgia for childhood. Pic related is actually more of an Ace Combat game than Ace Combat 7.

Played the Project Wingman DLC recently and it was alright, final boss too messy again and the most memorable mission was just something they stole from AC again (tunnel)

I guess the first mission against Mihaly but that was a great build up to your main ace enemy.

Nothing about AC 1-3 plays like PW and then lets not even talk about the fucking tone of the games. Can you seriously play through Kings or Cold War and fucking say the tone of that isn't far more in line with 04-Zero than it is 1-3
Also, hate to tell you mate, but 1-3 are not good games comparatively to 7. I can accept that you'd prefer 04-Zero to 7, since those games are properly realized Ace Combat games on all levels, but once you start trying to claim 1-3 are better than 7 or even 6 you've gone into a level of contrarian oldfagging I simply cannot respect. It's the same shit as the people that try and claim Armored Core's PS1 games are better than AC6. it's a fucking delusion and most of the times I dismiss it as bait because it's a level of "old good new bad" that is completely removed from reality.

Drones are a gimmick. 3 times flying fortress instead of 1 is a gimmick. Getting hit by lightning in a canyon is a gimmick. Desert is a gimmick. Mountain low attitude satellite sam is borderline gimmick. Mihail Railgun shenanigan's is a gimmick. ADF drones is a gimmick (and there are 2 missions with those). Visual target identification missions are a gimmick. Shoot the ammo for arsenal bird in thunderstorm and it blows up like a nuke is a fucking gimmick. Fly around without shooting anything and make a distraction is a gimmick.

The ratio of gimmick missions to non gimmick missions is completely reversed. In normal ace combat you get like 3 or 4 missions like that. Here every single fucking mission has a gimmick.

Lets have a look then, at AC7
Missions 1 through 3 have no gimmicks. Mission 4 has the gimmick at the start of dodging the radar but it's earned because it's a pivotal mission to the plot. Mission's 5 and 6 have no gimmicks either. Mission 7 is Mihaly's first appearance so the gimmick with the thunderstorm fits. Mission 8 I'll grant you is grating as fuck. Mission 9 was the low altitude one but also had the second half which was a straight up dogfight. Mission 10 has no gimmick, unless you count it's an escort mission at which point we're stretching the definition here, mission 11 and 12 have no gimmicks either. Mission 13 has no gimmick. Mission 14 has the run through the canyon. Mission 15 has no gimmicks. Mission 16 has the radar being down. Mission 17, 18, 19 have no gimmicks unless you count things like Mihaly boss fight or taking down Arsenal bird. Mission 20 has the tunnel run.
So out of 20 missions, 8 have gimmicks. Of those 8, one is mission 4 which is a big moment in the game, so's mission 7. I'd even throw mission 16 into here since it's the mission after the big setpiece of 15 so a slow down fits.
So out of 8 gimmicks take out 3 that fit where they were put, so that's arguably 5 missions which the gimmick's "intrusive" in my view. Out of 20 missions that also include Lighthouse, Battle for Farbanti, Fleet Destruction and Stonehenge Defensive and Two-pronged Strategy, which are some of the best in AC.
What's the issue then?

Wingman Commands are, dare I fucking say it, a gimmick. They barely impact the actual fucking gameplay. Not as if your AI Wingmen are of any use realistically. It's a gameplay element that's there to make it appear like it means a damn.

1
2 (I am being charitable cause those motherfuckers couldn't even hold their drone load in their balls for the traditional 2 mission tutorial)
5 (I will charitably skip the intro)
6
11
14(low altitude restriction is part of ace combat games)
15
18
19 (here is your free single flying fortress ticket. also part 1 of the mission is what ace combat is supposed to be)
9/20 with me being charitable.

But the missiles are locked. The IR/radar seekers have identified a target and calculated a path to it. The pilot fires them and the computer in the missile recalculates its path and makes adjustments several times per second. Because the missile is moving very fast, and there are no brakes on a solid rocket motor, there are situations where it can't turn sharp enough to maintain an intercept with the target.

Why did Ace Combat go the way of 5 and 6 instead of 4 and Zero?
5 and 6 just had so much story and yapping and gay nonsense that I just don't wanna listen to, meanwhile 4 and Zero are just straight to the point pure games.
I've kept myself purposefully spoiler free of 7, but will I like 7 if I already couldn't really stand 5 or 6?

It is 3 different stories stitched together to be one. So it is yapping and in the end it doesn't really make sense. The only remotely interesting part was the spare squadron part and that was fun but it just stops and goes nowhere in the end.

Pixy's antics doesn't stop the game. Play them back to back and you'll notice just how much more brevity Zero has and how much quicker it actually moves. Like 6 missions in and you have already had your second ace battle and it's awesome, and I'm currently 6 missions in on AC5 and I'm already sick of these characters.

>There's like 20 live action cutscenes shot documentary style
Pretty sure for each play-through you only get like 9 total interviews. They don't play all 20 or whatever how many there are back to back, come on now.

>pretentious filler.
Literally the only filler in the entire game is the Waldreich Mountains mission

>>713477285
I might get it if it goes on a massive sale this upcoming summer sale, but I'm still not quite sure.

>>713477612
Play 4, Zero, and 5 back to back and you will see just how much more brevity the former two games have.

Gonna be real anon, I think of the few memorable missions Project Wingman has, they all have a superior counterpart in an Ace Combat game that executed the concept better. I appreciate that game for what it is but it's sorely lacking in originality and I'll never get the endless glazing from contrarians.

I don't think anyone wanted any kind of crazy originality. What is original with it's setting and the general aesthetic of the game is fantastic. It's blatantly a love letter to ace combat and everyone loves it because of it. The OST is also fucking stellar. The final mission and fight against Crimson 1 is pure fucking kino and rivals AC in that regard.

Infinity had the right idea with planes by adding in the JRPG leveling system. So why did they remove that with Ace Combat 7? You could fly a F-II Phantom up against a F-22 with this system.

every difficulty had the same thing happen while Crimson 1 went on his chuuni rant in the final phase. The UI fade away, the orange bloom, the crazy fucking weapon spam, with the only difference being that the AI in the more difficult options was better. This of course caused casuals and faggots to reeeee so the devs reworked it. More or less, everybody got to have the same experience regardless of difficulty until the update
