This is a perfect example of why "more" isn't always better.

Red Dead Redemption has worse graphics than RDR2, a smaller map, a shorter campaign, less side activities, less guns, less options in gameplay, less detail AND IT'S STILL A WAY BETTER GAME. It was better gameplay, better writing, better music, better characters, better missions, RDR1 is fucking TIGHT, and doesn't waste your time pretending to be an HBO series.

somewhere along the line rockstar decided that realism was more important than fun and now their games are chore simulators

rdr1 is better than rdr2 becouse rdr1 feels like a kickass spaghetti western movie and rdr2 tries too hard to be realistic. the piss filter makes the game look gritty and tough and fucking awesome and the colorful filter makes it look just like boring real life

i want to be Josey Wales not just an random ass boring dying of TB redneck bum in 1899

I am RDR1fag that dislikes RDR2 as a game, but RDR2 incredibly visually stunning and manages to be one of the few games to pull off hyper-realism while still possessing beauty and appeal. Just because the first game is better doesn't inherently mean every aspect of it is.

I finished RDR2 a couple of weeks ago and even though it was an excellent cowboy simulator it didn't scratch my itch and it felt way too long. I never played 1 back when it released for whatever fucking reason and hear it's a much more condensed experience, and like most spaghetti westerns isn't afraid to be campy at times. Should I give it a go? I just want a good spaghetti western game with sharp dialogue and grit, 2 felt way too modern and safe.

I recently played RDR for the first time and enjoyed it, but I prefer RDR2. I'm one of those few people who actually enjoy the slow and quiet pace of these games, so I guess it's made specifically for people like me. Now please go ahead and explain why my subjective opinion is objectively wrong.

RDR1 is literally a spaghetti western with every trope in the book, it's a more arcadey gameplay style and the characters are almost cartoons, and yet it can be serious when it needs to be. It's more in line with Vice City or San Andreas than GTAIV or GTAV.
Anonymous No.713469390 [Report]
>>713469251
That's what I can gather. The character models are slightly exaggerated, both in proportions and facial features, they remind me of old school GTA concept art. I think IV still retains some of that character, it's V that decided to go full realism.

RDR1
>start mission
>ride alongside side character listening to embarassing dialogue
>reach destination a mile away
>kill a dozen men
>"ride back yourself - bye"
RDR2
>slowly wade through camp like the ground is made of treacle
>ride alongside side character listening to the hackiest dialogue ever written
>reach destination 15 miles away
>help load 30 apples into the cider press one by one really slowly
>hold a button to churn the apples
>"damnit arthur, we don't want chunky cider"
>help dig a hole to plant the azaleas
>go to the post office to mail a letter for dutch
>ride back halfway. your companion is still talking passionately about the american dream and the pitfalls of a class based society
>"oh no arthur, it's the bingbingwahoo boys. they must've followed us"
>kill 40 men without consequence
>"phew, that'll teach em"
>arrive back at camp
>"thanks arthur. I think dutch needs your help with his translation of beowulf. go see him in his tent"

I tried replaying RDR1 after playing it as a teenager back in the day but I quit shortly after the first 2 or 3 missions, it's just too fucking boring and I already know how the story goes, I heard RDR2 quadrupled down on the tedium. Honest question, does it (RDR1) get better? What was it that made you go "wow I'm glad I'm playing this game it's great"?
Anonymous No.713473163 [Report]
I think there's definitely a case to be made for games that are shorter and smaller in scale so you don't have to commit 70hrs to completing it again. That's why I think out of the Arkham games, Asylum is like comfort food.

I like westerns. I like the physics engine that makes people fall all over the place, especially after getting shot. I like the shooting system, you abuse the lock on and all the horses run at 90mph so it's easy but hectic. I like the execution cinematics and it's a nice risk vs reward of running in close for an instant kill vs losing life and maybe dying trying to do it. I like the writing and the characters are larger than life, they never go on too long and always say something darkly funny or fucked up. I like the music, even the ambient stuff. I like how it's an open world but really it's a series of large rectangles and it's quality > quantity in terms of settlements and points of interest but still gives that expansive open feeling you get watching westerns.

I don' think RDR2 makes 1 redundant but come on, who are you kidding here bro. Especially better characters, 1 barely had proper characters, it was at least 50% complete charictatures with no depth, one of them being a character who was lifted 1:1 from The Outlaw Josey Wales

Arthur is a criminal cowboy with current year mentality. He IS a caricature. The antagonize options were a joke. I mean, Mass Effect was cursed as a series but at least Renegade Shepard was badass. Even RDR2's villain felt like a Disney character.

NTA but I played the PC remaster 6 months ago and it still holds up. I couldn't finish RDR2 after getting so burned out on it. But RDR1 was but better paced, and even the obvious time waster stuff respects your time more.
RDR2 is a great cowboy sim, but as an action game I would put RDR1 above.
