Why would I spend more money for an increment that doesn't have trackpads, possibly gyro, and uses Windows over a handheld built and optimized for SteamOS and gaming? Why not just wait on the generational leap that is the Steam Deck 2 instead of wasting money on some handheld from some generic company that specializes in making PCs instead of ones made specifically for gaming with an OS made specifically for gaming?

Nobody actually knows if Deck 2 will happen. Valve only did the Deck because they needed something to get Steam OS and Proton into people's hands and they're already moving on to phase two by rolling out Steam OS for other devices, which will eventually lead to a new wave of Steam Machines that actually do things right.

It's a third party application that's supposed to automate the installation and configuration of non-Steam games you install from other game accounts. The problem is you do this by giving it your login credentials, do you really want to trust some piece of software with your username, email, and password?

Deck 2 will happen one day, but Valve aren't going to rush it. They didn't want the deck to be something that constantly changes, since they're putting so much work into the deck verified program. I see it more like a console that has a long life cycle, 5-8 years. 2-3 more years sounds right.
I have doubts about deck 3 though.

The Deck can comfortably run Gamecube, PS2, and below. The hard part is getting all the emulators and roms on there, then organizing all of that shit, without a mouse and keyboard. Spoilers: It's going to fucking suck setting everything up, but the actual act of emulating on the Deck is good.
And don't use EmuDeck, that shit is fucking ass to work with and they now lock features behind patreon. RetroDeck is a lot better and is actually made for the Steam Deck rather than just supporting it.

Basically at the specs we're looking at, there isn't going to be a meaningful change in compatibility which would be like the number one thing (amount of games you can play on it).
If you're sure you want a handheld pc for gaming, the Deck is basically your best bet since everything else is trying to compete on hardware spec when that largely isn't the issue with handheld pcs (ergonomics and software).

You extract the pirated game to any folder, go to steam and add non steam game, select the .exe, tell it to run using proton and you're done.

If the game has an installer its the same but you add the installer to steam first, run it. When its done you look for the install location and swap the game .exe with the installer .exe.

I just made that post but I'm going to present a counterargument as well: The Deck's hardware is 300% obsolete at this point and it's highly flawed as a gaming device. You're not going to get good performance without sacrificing 60fps, and at the OLED's price it's more expensive than it's actually worth. There's a million other handheld PCs available now that Valve blew open the doors for them, some of which you can install Steam OS on, and if you don't care about it being handheld there's an entire market of mini PCs that are hundreds of dollars cheaper that'll dance circles around the Steam Deck in terms of performance. If you're going for the Deck then you're going for two things: guaranteed support from Valve, and the largest community for handheld PCs who will provide you with everything you could ever need.

Yes, with Microsoft coming for OEMs, they could muscle their way in. Valve is going to put out at least one more handheld given the success of the Steam Deck that hits all those performance benchmarks they want but I wouldn't expect a Steam Deck 3 though.

Nah he's a fag, if you don't have it, you should pick up Worms Armageddon and Ultimate Mayhem on Steam, they're $3 right now and fuck.
You can hot seat multiplayer with a pal too

>I'm only playing old titles/indie slop anyway. Anything above the specs of the OLED seems like overkill to me.
Honestly, I think Valve is only doing it for future-proofing. In truth, I don't think there is a reason for a Steam Deck 3 nor do I believe Nintendo should make a Switch 3. Gaming has hit a wall on graphics.

>Gaming has hit a wall on graphics.
That's what happens when you prioritize shiny visuals over actual good gameplay. You can polish a turd all you want and put sprinkles on it but it's still a nasty turd at the end of the day.

Eventually they'll need CUDA cores for AI integrated games unless everything goes cloud only, in which case specs stop mattering altogether. Neither of those are supposed to be good things but I'm pretty sure the future is one of those if not both.

>for AI integrated games
The RTX remix shit is already a dying fad that people mostly use for the raytraced lighting.
>Cloud only
Not realistically possible

I'm talking about games using AI for things like NPC dialogue.

Not happening because it takes more time to train a language model than baking lighting and modern lazy devs already gave up on baking.

Don't NPUs already do that or are the CUDAs more advanced?

I don't think our hardware is anywhere close to running a good model and a game at the same time. It would have to be some cloud garbage. Not worth.

Yup, no Steam Deck 3 or Switch 3. We really don't need them since most if not all games should be playable on both anyways. Plus, when AAA crashes, there won't be any need for anymore generational leaps.
