Is there a game where being a healer is actually fun?

Guild Wars, the Monk. Mainly because you have protection abilities that are extremely powerful but limited in target scope & expensive to use, so if you place them properly they're highly effective, but if you don't, not so much. And then there's also regular redbarring to fall back on, but the prot prayers give you a high skill, high reward type of gameplay where if you are paying close attention to what the enemy's doing and being proactive in applying defensive enchantments you can carry your team.

any mmo worth a damn (before wow/xiv casualization) had healers and supports as a vital role that could unironically filter people. hell, most mmos don't even have proper support/debuffer classes anymore like bards or enchanters

It's particularly fun with a friend when you do hero plays to save each other while RPing like you're in the intro scene to Tropic Thunder. Probably the only series I can think of where healer can actually be the most fun class. Unsurprisingly, also the only one where it's just a perk of your class and not what the gameplay revolves around. Being able to heal yourself, and having passive healing for teammates, even allows you to be much more aggressive and actually cover people rather than relying on them to do everything.

it was fun in guild wars 1. Also I enjoyed white mage in FFXI. Lengthy cast times, enmity management and having to manage MP made it more complex than later MMOs.

Came here to say this, except with AP soraka before they ruined her. It's very fun to be able to play your lane and then ult when top lane is in trouble. You can often get seething reactions from the enemy team and your top laner thanks you.

Team Fortress 2. Scrambling to keep a team alive while taking heavy fire is extremely satisfying and exciting.

I know /v/ will disagree but Overwatch had some mechanically fun healer characters stuck in an unfun game.
