Did your parents ever pay attention to ESRB or PEGI ratings or were you allowed to play anything you wanted?

Yes. Mom would. She would even hang out for the first hour or so to monitor and would talk to me about the game and themes. Nothing profound but stuff along the lines of
>You know killing people is bad, right?
>Drugs can and do ruin lives.
>Please don't pick up those swear words.

A few games she even showed a bit of a passing interest and wanted to know a little more about the story. I can't really remember anything too specific bit I do remember talking about video games quite a bit with her. Dad got super into the first Diablo too and we would play it together on his lunch break.

I was not allowed to play mature game before high school, because there was an infamous incident in my class where a special needs kid forced his little sister to suck his dick and my parents were absolutely convinced this only happened because games like GTA had corrupted his mind.

Back when I was a 14, I wanted to get Halo 2 and the fat neckbeard manning the store refused to sell it to me without ID (looking back I think he was just mad a kid wanted to buy Halo)
Came back the next day on the weekend with mom in tow to buy it, and the guy literally tried to convince my mother not to buy it with every little trick he could (it's too violent, we have another game just as good, etc).
I ended up getting it, but it permanently soured my opinion on that type of person.

I was never allowed M-rated games, R-rated movies, etc. It made me even more of a social outcast than I already was, not being familiar with anything the cool kids talked about like Resident Evil or South Park.

Yes. If a guy implies he masturbates it's M.
If a girl implies she masturbates it's AO.

Walmart carries games rated M. They do not carry games rated AO. Having your game rated as AO is a death mark.

Not for literal years until one day in elementary school when I said I'd shoot a kid with a PP27 (James Bond pistol) out of anger and then it was bye bye to access to M rated games for like, 2-3 years but they eventually caved and went back to not giving a shit.

Yes, my mum was one of those "violent games cause violence" type of people and was anal about the PEGI ratings, I wasn't even allowed Brawl or Twilight Princess because I was 9 and they were rated 12+. By only allowing me to play bing bing wahoo she basically turned me into an autistic tendie and even now when I can play whatever I want I still gravitate towards Japanese weeb shit almost exclusively and completely avoid western games. Maybe I would have been different if I were allowed to play Cowadooty and GTA like everyone else

It's really funny reading posts like these. I was playing Brawl at 6 on launch after having played extensive amounts of Melee and by the time my cousin was 14 he had played Halo for many years and would let me play whenever I came over (starting from ages 4-5). It's really weird to picture a teenager being treated like a little kid. The only thing my parents were weird about was me watching South Park but by the time I was 10-11 they didn't care. That must suck to be treated like a little kid into your teens when you're well into puberty (like I was).

My parents bought me the AO version of San Andreas when I was 8 and didn't give a single shit but they'd go ballistic if they found out I was playing a game with literally any form of online whatsoever because they thought I'd give out my home address and pictures of my asshole to strangers if I spend even 5 seconds online unsupervised.

My parents already exposed me to shit via fantasy novels and their weird 80s movies so video games were fairly tame. By the time legit hardcore M games like Manhunt were hitting I already filtered myself from it because it just wasn't my thing.
I do remember getting ID'd for Left 4 Dead though, that was fucking weird. Of all the games I've bought in store THAT was the one the clerk raised an eyerbrow at.
