is this a case like the snes cart batteries that will only last "5 to 10 years at most"?

TLDR basically the nand chip that game carts use basically lose memory if it isnt powered on every 5-10 years and the game cartridge will die if left alone in a closet for too long.

I got into vita collecting and all new + used carts have worked fine. Some of the games been around since 2011. While i dont doubt the steps to refresh the nand, 5-10 is probably the lower end of its actual range. What they put on paper so they can avoid letigation

wait did the vita have cartridges? this feels like a mandela effect because I could have sworn vita, like the psp before it, used disks and they made fun of us 3ds bros for not having discs???????

even if true(big if), im ready to bet 5-10y is a very conservative estimate, it's unthinkable that stockpiles of ds games could have been dead by the time 3ds came out.

It's statistically a real phenomenon but meanwhile in the real world PS1 memory cards (also flashROM) still have working save data from decades ago
No harm in refreshing your flashROM cards once a decade, though

Only problem with some games are those that have a battery to hold the save or rtc.

But we are supposed to believe DS gmes are going to kill themselves.

This specifically affects NAND memory, which is somewhat recent. Old cartridges typically used mask ROMs which don't suffer from this at all.
This has been an issue with EEPROMs for a while in fact, it just doesn't normally come up because they're usually used for things like prototype cartridges or settings on arcade machines so the average person doesn't encounter it.

All these anons on the defensive instead of learning to take care of their stuff properly.
The technology used to store Switch 1 games on memory cards is quite resilient, with the developer/manufacturer estimating a lifespan of 20 years, which is insane for flash cards. Twenty years is way more than any normal consumer needs, but it doesn't cost anything to take minimal care and run your games once every fucking 5 years, it's not like it's a lot of work to do.
This will only become a problem when your children or grandchildren find your game box in the attic in 30 or 40 years and discover that 75% of those games no longer work. It's kind of like when people find old floppy disks, it's common to find that many of them have corrupted data after a few decades in a box.

This is a scare tactic from well informed collectors to get midwit collectors to unseal their games, ruining their rarity. There is seriously no such thing as NAND death, infact I opened a sealed 3DS game (Steeldiver) just last month and it worked no problem.

Because /v/ was poisoned by internet wars. When someone says, "hey, you need to take care of your physical Switch games", autists interpret it as, "this snoy is implying that Nintendo games are disposable, ahhhhhh!"
